Mangrove Creek Dam Visitor Centre Now Open! W hen Slater Architects was contacted by Central Coast Council, the brief was to recreate the Mangrove Creek Dam Visitor Centre, incorporating a new interactive visitor education centre, accessible amenities, picnic shelters and a children’s play area. The design of the visitor centre comprises of a feature butterfly roof that is angled in 2 directions to embrace the views and orientation towards the dam. Materials have been selected to reflect the natural environment and provide longevity and include natural finishes such as rammed earth, polished concrete, plywood, timber look screens, black steel and framing. The amenities building and picnic shelters have been designed with a similar aesthetic to provide a cohesive built form. Apart from budget and time constraints, there were several other site constraints to overcome such as flamezone bushfire requirements, minimal maintenance, and vehicular and accessibility requirements. The collaborative design approach was key to the success of this project and input from expert consultants was obtained an at early stage in the design process. The design encourages insight into the natural environment, cultural heritage and highlights important components of the Central Coast’s water supply system. Photographer: Kevin Chamberlain

Whale watching spots on the Central Coast
T he whale migration along the NSW coastline runs from May until November. The waters off our coastline are currently very busy with whales on their migration north to the warmer waters off Queensland to breed or give birth. NSW National Parks and Wildlife recommends these top whale watching spots: Bouddi Coastal Walk, Bouddi National Park – This 8.5km Bouddi coastal walk runs from Putty Beach to Macmasters Beach and is known for its excellent boardwalk offering sublime ocean views. The track hugs the rugged coastline providing ample opportunities to spot whales and dolphins and enjoy the beautiful beaches and picnic spots. Gerrin Point lookout, Bouddi National Park – For a fantastic vantage point without a long hike, head to Gerrin Point lookout. This spot is located along the Bouddi coastal walk and is reached via a short walk from the eastern end of Putty Beach. Relax on the bench and soak up the panoramic views of Maitland Bay and the Bouddi National Park Marine Extension. Wyrrabalong National Park – Make a day out of whale watching and head to Crackneck lookout. Spot whales with expansive views
the highest vantage point, the landscaped sandstone platform provides a clear viewing point out over Bateau Bay. Plenty of parking is available, and picnic tables and amenities are close by. Copacabana Beach – Whale Watching Platform – Captain Cook Lookout. At the Southern end of the coast this purpose-built platform has views all the way south to Palm Beach; perfect for watching the annual whale migration. To remain safe when whale watching, keep at least five metres from cliff edges and rock platforms and pay close attention to signage.
over Shelley Beach and The Entrance and enjoy a picnic on the grassy area or at one of the picnic tables. After lunch, stroll along The Coast walking track that stretches north to Bateau Bay or south to Forresters Beach. Pelican Beach Road Lookout – For a tranquil whale watching experience, located at the northern end of Wyrrabalong National Park. Enjoy spotting whales from the great lookout platform or go for a relaxing walk along the beach's long stretch of golden sand. The Skillion, Terrigal - You can drive and park easily at the base of the Skillion, however, it is a steep walk to the top. This has been made easier in recent years with the concrete stairway and path added. Your effort will be rewarded with your uninterrupted ocean view from the top. Norah Head Lighthouse - There is designated parking with a pathway to the Lighthouse. There are ample spots to sit and scan for the passing whales. Why not get the best view of the whales right from the top and book a lighthouse tour to walk the 96 stairs to the top! Bateau Bay Beach Viewing Area - Perfect for taking in the sights. Thoughtfully curated landscaping compliments architectural brilliance I n a world where first impressions matter, your home’s exterior design plays a crucial role in setting the tone for the entire property. Embracing modern aesthetic sensibilities not only enhances your home’s curb appeal but also reflects your personal style and appreciation for contemporary living. Modern home exteriors offer a variety of benefits that can enhance both aesthetics and functionality. Here are some key advantages: Improved Curb Appeal: Modern home exteriors often feature bold architectural lines, clean designs, and a mix of materials. These elements create visually arresting facades that instantly boost curb appeal. Protection Against the Elements: Repainting your home’s exterior is essential for maintaining its protective barrier against weather conditions. A fresh coat of paint helps prevent moisture infiltration, rot, and decay, ensuring the longevity of your home. Integration of Indoor and Outdoor Spaces: Modern designs seamlessly blend indoor and outdoor living. Outdoor entertainment areas, such as patios and decks, allow you to enjoy warm summer nights and cosy winter gatherings while extending your living space outdoors. Increased Property Value: A well-designed modern exterior with attractive landscaping and colourful garden beds can significantly enhance your home’s value. Prospective buyers are often drawn to contemporary aesthetics and functional outdoor spaces. Cost Savings: Regular maintenance, including repainting, prevents more extensive damage and costly repairs down the line. Investing in your home’s exterior now can save you money in the long term. Eco-Conscious Design: Sustainable materials and energy-efficient features are common in modern home exteriors. By choosing eco-friendly options, you contribute to a greener environment.

Discover Nature at its best this winter
A natural attraction of the Central Coast is the huge variety of bushland parks, trails, and stunning lookouts to enjoy on foot, on your bike, and even by horse. Central Coast Council manages a network of bushland and other natural reserves in the Coastal Open Space System (COSS). These reserves are places where our native plants, animals, fungi, and other living organisms can thrive. Access to parts of or some reserves is prohibited to allow native species to remain undisturbed but in others Council has provided picnic areas, lookouts and walking tracks so that residents and visitors can experience and enjoy the natural environment. Bushwalking - Our reserves have many walking tracks to explore from 20-minute gentle circuit tracks, to challenging full day walks. They lead through a variety of habitats including lush rainforest, towering wet
interesting plants and rock formations. “The Sid Pulsford fire trail” provides a longer experience for walkers and bike riders wanting to explore the reserve further. The main picnic area can be reached by car from Kincumber Street, Kincumber. Picnics - Our bushland reserves have several large picnic areas to enjoy. You may want to try one of our hilltop picnic areas “St John’s Picnic Area” in Katandra Reserve at Mount Elliot, “Yaruga Picnic Area” in Rumbalara Reserve at East Gosford, “Honeman’s Rock Picnic Area” in Kincumba Mountain Reserve at Kincumber. Lookouts - Many lookouts provide outstanding views of the coastline, waterways, bushland, and urban areas. Some of the easier access lookouts in the bushland reserves are: “Marie Byles Lookout” at Killcare Heights, “St John Lookout” in Katandra Reserve at Mount Elliot, “Yaruga Lookout” in Rumbalara Reserve at East Gosford.
sclerophyll forests and wildflower-filled ridge top woodlands including: Rumbalara and Katandra Reserves – “The Railway to Rainforest” walk leads from Gosford Railway Station to the rainforest at Seymour Pond, in Katandra Reserve in Holgate. This is an extensive 11-kilometre return walk (22km all up) that allows views of some of the most spectacular landscapes in the Coastal Open Space System. There are a number of shorter loop walks available if time is limited. The walk can be accessed from the Donnison Street entrance to Rumbalara Reserve or off the Katandra Road entrance to Katandra Reserve. Picnic and barbecue facilities are provided in both reserves. P eninsula seniors keen to extend their social circle and enjoy a variety of fun and educational activities and meet likeminded people are encouraged to come and join in at Ettalong 50 Plus Leisure and Learning Centre. Previously the Senior Citizens Centre, the Ettalong 50 Plus is now run by a dedicated team of skilled volunteers who co-ordinate a broad and diverse range of activities from Bootscooting, Bridge, Yoga, Tai Chi, Table Tennis, and everything in between. Member for Gosford, Liesl Tesch MP encourages locals to capitalise on the camaraderie and connection of community-based clubs. “Community clubs like Ettalong 50 Plus are safe, welcoming destinations run by older members of the community, for the benefit of older members of the community. They are places where people from all walks of life can come together, build a network of friendship, and enjoy relaxed get-togethers with like-minded people. Centre President John Gibbins said, “The Centre is open for everything from cards, to Clubbersize and even a light-hearted community choir. Operating inside this large building Ettalong 50 Plus houses numerous comfortable, practical spaces featuring a calm library space, computer room, indoor bowling area, large dining room with a commercial-grade kitchen and a dance hall. “We’re a not-for-profit that will broaden friendships and open peoples’ eyes to activities they may not have tried,” says Mr Gibbins. “Nothing beats being in the company of like-minded individuals.” Lovely for the lungs - Highlighting the community choir that meets on a Friday at 12:30pm, Mr Gibbins says: “Our community choir gives people a chance to open the lungs, lower stress, have a laugh and heighten joy. Singing can even help lower blood pressure and improve respiratory function!” ‘Jean’, who was attending the ‘women’s shed’ (an art and craft group) Ettalong 50 Plus offers a dynamic activity roster
on Thursday morning at time of writing, was knitting a blanket for her brother. She became an Ettalong 50 Plus member five years ago for social connection. “I moved up here from Sydney some years ago and I didn’t know a soul. I needed to meet people. The best aspect of joining Ettalong 50 Plus is the friendships I’ve made, with craft coming in a close second. Members are so welcoming and friendly.” Nicki O’Connor, who joined Ettalong 50 Plus in 2000, has enjoyed being a convenor of a raft of club activities including playing cards, quilting and patchwork. “I love teaching painting, card making, origami, simple jewellery, like bracelets and earrings. We do a lot of charity work too – making blankets for WeCare Connect – it’s amazing what you can make from a few scraps of wool… we upcycle Christmas cards too – in fact we produced 368 for nursing homes last Christmas…” The Centre is always on the lookout for motivated, skilled individuals with spare hours each week to fill a range of roles. Adds Mr Gibbins: “We are always on the hunt for volunteers – whether that’s to conduct an event, help with catering, design flyers to help promote the centre, or even look after our Facebook.” Bring along the gentlemen! ‘Vicki’ is a big fan of the Monday fitness class. “I finally got my husband to come along to the Monday class! He’s one of 3 gentlemen in a group of about thirty women! It’s a fabulous class, with exercise stations set up around the hall and there are stretches performed at the end. It’s wonderful hearing him say “‘I can do this! I’m really liking this!’” Dynamic activity roster - Another class is Tech Savvy Seniors, a NSW Government initiative in partnership with Telstra that provides hands on help with technology skills. With the rise of digital, basic computer skills can help older members of the community navigate online activities with greater ease, confidence and of course safety. “Even if you’re a little restless, wanting to learn a new skill, or simply polish up and old one, Ettalong 50 Plus will roll out the welcome mat for anyone aged fifty-plus.” Leatherwork , held on Wednesdays from 9:00am – 12:00 midday, gives members the opportunity to get their hands on many kinds of leatherworking tools and techniques to handle leather materials. Members could make a wallet, a belt, a key chain or perhaps something decorative. Memberships - $15 annually , with selected activities costing $3 each. Interested locals can find out more by posting a message on the website, ettalong50plus.org.au, or by dropping in for a visit at the corner of Broken Bay Road and Karingi Street, Ettalong Beach. Open Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 4:00pm, Ettalong 50 Plus.

M aking the right decision when choos ing your home flooring is an important decision that can significantly impact both functionality and aesthetics. Here are some key factors to consider when buying new flooring: Traffic Levels: Think about how much foot traffic the area will receive. High-traffic areas like entryways, halls, and kitchens require more durable flooring than bedrooms or bathrooms. For heavy traffic, consider options like laminate flooring. Consider the type of foot traffic (or paw traffic if you have pets). Heavy use areas may require more robust flooring options. Durability: Assess the durability requirements based on the room’s use. Bathrooms and laundries need waterproof flooring, while kitchens benefit from moisture resistant surfaces. Installation Process: Consider the installation process. If you’re not moving out during installation, avoid solid hardwood flooring (engineered timber floors are a better option). For DIY installation, choose flooring that clicks together rather than stick-down methods and check whether your chosen flooring needs underlay. Cleaning and Maintenance: Different flooring types require varying levels of care. Consider how much time you’re willing to spend on cleaning and maintenance. Some floors are low maintenance, while others may need more Choosing the right flooring for your home

attention. Budget: Set a budget for your flooring project. Different materials have varying price points, so choose something that fits your financial constraints. Replaceability: Think about how easy it is to replace the flooring if needed. Some materials can be replaced more easily than others. Sustainability: If environmental impact matters to you, explore sustainable flooring options like Bamboo or eco-friendly choices. THE EXPERT ask the odds of recovery a healthy lifestyle shift is logically a must. The old adage that we are what we eat is so relevant to Cancer and yet amazingly overlooked. That said, food itself is nowhere near powerful enough to battle, with dense nutrients required. These powerful components come via genuine concentrated supplementation & Nutraceuticals For 3 decades now I‘ve counseled Cancer sufferers to remain positive in the context of reality. Refreshingly, some wise individuals embrace the message for the need to change & do well. At the risk of sounding pessimistic (never the case) for all the media reports and never ending barrage of false hopes re actual cures becoming available within 5 years postulated by entities with obvious hidden agendas and others with genuine sincerity, the incidence of as well as mortality rates are indeed on the rise overall. Nevertheless while perception is king in marketing, as always the truth is reality to avoid denial. Now for the story behind my story, albeit a very basic synopsis or else a book will be required Forty years ago I happened to read a book by a Russian gentleman who overcame Cancer in his throat by exclusively using Propolis – of course this one anecdotal testimony wasn’t enough to run with, though certainly intriguing to say the least and sufficient to spark my initial passion. Later on I came to understand that when employed together with Vitamin C, the ensuing synergistic & catalytic reactions would enhance Propolis to achieve dynamic non-toxic results. Ironically Aussies still don’t know the amazing resin from bees that all kids once loved on trees. It’s a classic example of God-given wonders in nature we so often miss in the busyness of life. Thankfully this spurred my quest to research & source the intrinsically best naturally derived substances to support those suffering with Cancer from a genuine 1st do no harm perspective. Ten years on I was mentioned in a bestselling Prostate Cancer book not having realised the author was actually already using a product on himself that I’d been privileged to work in the development of, as well as another that I’d go on to have a substantial hand in. While he endorsed many substances in the book, these 2 were indeed the major highlights. Not long afterwards I had the pleasure of meeting & eventually forming a strong bond with Bernard Hughes, a WW2 fighter pilot
BY GEOFF GARLINGE
Prevention - Still the key & better than cure
W ith or without a Cancer diagnosis the gold message is still the same. Be kind to your body and build the bomb shelter before the bomb or subsequent ones drop. Living a functional & sustainable lifestyle is actually really enjoyable (I can’t recall last being ill). In the absence of Cancer both the chance of & frequency of sickness is naturally reduced. Again dealing with cancer will be phenomenally better implementing a wise healthy strategy. Promising so much would eventuate way back by the year 2000, our techno age that offered to dramatically improve quality of life has conversely failed across the board in the Cancer realm. The often insidious & sometimes rapidly progressing disease continues to clearly outsmart Medical Science in many forms, being that it is both highly adaptive while also elusive. This in effect means that primary tumors often already possess the innate ability to mutate as well as migrate at a cellular level, before basically parking to lay dormant as they hide out to avoid detection prior to re-emerging at the most inopportune time for them when the body is lacking adequate nutrition, not fortified and natural defence mechanisms are compromised. And while it’s certainly crucial to vigilantly maintain diagnostics, they can’t be 100% relied on. With the exception of a small number of specific conditions and as we now speedily approach a quarter of the way through the 21st century, the overall war is far from being won as the statistical data continues to be cleverly manipulated in order to validate ongoing use of conventional invasive therapies. The 5 year survival rate touted as the supposed indicator of success serves to illustrate this. The truth however is that most metastases (secondary Cancers causing the majority of deaths) occur afterwards and hence are not included in statistics designed to support the status quo. Even children are now well acquainted with the big C word, with many suffering themselves. Again this reflects on the failure of the modern day to deliver better quality of life for all ages. Fake toxic plastic foods are the new norm for multitudes, so why are we surprised to hear that 1 in 2 of all Aussies currently living are predicted to develop Cancer revealing the true situation. Nevertheless, thankfully while there’s life there’s hope for many from the natural perspective. In order to dramatically increase
diagnosed with aggressive Prostate cancer along with a disastrous prognosis who at 77 committed to a healthy lifestyle shift and lived well until 99! Another 7 years passed and my beautiful wife Lynda was diagnosed (missed by Mammogram) with highly infiltrating ductal carcinoma i.e. aggressive breast Cancer quite possibly via the typical 2 glasses of wine making dinner (not being privy to the knowledge back then), before being told in no uncertain terms by the top Professor & Specialist surgeon in the field that she would be dead in 2 years – unless she opted for Chemo, Radiation + the drug of choice (though not any more being an epic fail due to poor efficacy along with corresponding ensuing side effects). Just as with all others my counsel was “it’s your life/ body/Cancer and ultimately your choice that only you can make and should you decide to go down the Natural path, you’ll need to be 100% consistent in both the short & long term”. Thankfully she decided not to undergo the 1st recommendations with recent diagnostics confirming she’s still cancer free and just celebrated her 72nd birthday 22yrs later. Never did I imagine that down the track I would enjoy the privilege of working together with some of our finest minds in Universities on trials & studies based on Nutraceutical research. Together we’re strong as we put ego aside in order to receive from one another to help others. Nanomedicine advancements/ applications are particularly exciting as tangible results emerge. When young I knew so little, but now well know that the smartest people are made of others. Many people ask me if I get burdened fielding a constant stream of Cancer cases at all hours. The honest answer is never as I’m always mindful that mine is really a calling rather than a job. Being privileged to support those who need substantial help is a purpose driven vocation. Those who know me well are aware I embrace & live by the same principles I teach others. Hence why again thank God I can’t remember the last time I was unwell, which is amazing especially considering my oldest grandson is nearly 29 and my start in life was not good. So there is much to be said for an attitude of gratitude & a joyful heart that is good medicine. Keep looking up, be kind to others and your body to stay strong & keep well.

M any of us find it hard to ask for support. It can be difficult finding the right words to describe how you feel – and even harder, finding the right person to talk to. But having the support of others can help you cope with whatever it is you’re experiencing. Talking to someone in a safe space can help you figure out what you’re feeling. It’s a release that helps ease the burden of keeping whatever it is that’s bothering you a secret. If you’re nervous about talking to someone about your feelings, try practising what you will say and how you will say it. Choosing a location that makes you feel relaxed and uninterrupted will also help you remain calm and overcome some of the fears you might have about sharing your feelings. It can be overwhelming especially if you’re not sure how to describe what you’re feeling – or if the person you’re talking to understands. Sometimes it helps acknowledging that you don’t know what to say and that it is hard for you to talk about what you’re going through. Decide what you want to share and try giving examples of what you’re experiencing; “I used to really look forward to footy training – but when it rolls around each Tuesday night, I just don’t care anymore.” “I enjoy seeing you, but I get so overwhelmed that I don’t want to leave the house. And so, I cancel.” Be gentle with yourself and take as much time as you need. Share your thoughts I know I need support, but how do I ask for it? What should I say?
between you and me for now.” Communicate as clearly as you can about what support you think you might need; “I’m not coping, and I need help figuring out what to do about it.” You or the person you’re talking to may not have the answers, and that's fine. People process news and information differently. If you ask someone for support and they are not helpful, it can hurt. This could be a sign that the person you’re talking to doesn’t understand what you’re experiencing – it’s not a reflection of you. Try talking to someone else to get the support you need. Consider talking to your GP or you can also try using spaces like Beyond Blue Online Forums to chat online and share your experience anonymously with other people experiencing something similar to you. Or phone Beyond Blue as they will to talk to you anytime 24 hours per day 7 days per week. If you need support right now, you can talk or chat online anonymously to a counsellor. Don’t delay - Phone: 1300 224 636
and feelings in a way that is comfortable for you. If you are seeing a GP for the first time and know that you may feel daunted by the experience, a useful tip is to write down how you're feeling ahead of time. "I frequently suggest to people that they write down their symptoms, feelings, thoughts before attending their appointments. That way you can refer to your paper without having to think about what to say. Trying to put into words your thoughts when you are already nervous can make you more nervous. So, prepare ahead. The doctor will understand. If you still cannot speak then just give the paper to the doctor to read. I have done this on several occasions, and it makes life a bit easier." You may need support, or you may just want to talk to someone about how you’re feeling. Either way, this conversation is a good opportunity to let people know what you need. “I don’t need solutions now. I just need someone to listen. I’d just like to keep this

Food donation Callout! H elp people doing it tough with donations of everyday food and personal care staples - tinned meats and fish, small and family sized shampoos, conditioners and soaps single-serving milks are much-needed hamper items at Mary Mac’s Place in Woy Woy. Member for Gosford, Liesl Tesch MP says demand for Mary Mac’s Place hampers from families, individuals and people doing it tough is stronger than ever. “For many disadvantaged members of our community, the cupboards are almost bare. For some people in need, the food cupboards are entirely bare.” “With recent figures from Mary Mac’s suggesting demand for its food hampers has gone from 50 hampers a week to a huge 150, even some of the shelves in Mary Mac’s own food pantry are also looking a little understocked. Coastie singles, families, and people who are homeless depend on these hampers. “I encourage members of the community to drop off a bag of essential groceries to lend a helping hand to those less fortunate. Dropping in some meals-in-a-tin for Mary Mac’s hampers can be a big help to locals living rough. Even the simple act of donating some tinned fish could be a real help to a family making their kids’ school sandwiches. Mary Mac’s provides many kinds of support for the Coast’s homeless, transient, and disadvantaged – from a daily hot meal to shower and laundry facilities and Health on the Street services, including podiatry and hairdressing. Mary Mac’s Place volunteer Pauline Lazarus said donations from the local community made a real difference. “We are very fortunate to receive donations such as food and groceries from local The Central Coast Seniors Interagency A new interagency dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of seniors in the Central Coast region has been established. The Central Coast Seniors Interagency is a partnership between The Central Coast Community Council, Central Coast Council, and Central Coast Local Health District’s Health Promotion Service. It will support a collaborative approach across services and community organisations who are dedicated to addressing the unique and changing needs of the rapidly growing senior’s population on the Central Coast. With the proportion of people aged 70 years or older expected to increase to 20% by 2041, it is important we facilitate opportunities to work collectively to not only identify needs and challenges, but also streamline communication and information sharing. A key focus of the interagency will be on areas critical to providing a supportive local environment that promotes a wholistic and positive approach to ageing, including physical activity, nutrition, mental health, social engagement and isolation, and digital literacy that facilitate people living independently in the community. Central Coast Council Community and Recreation Services Unit Manager, Phil Cantillon, said the partnership “marks a significant step forward in Council’s commitment to supporting the senior members of our community,” "The creation of this interagency will enable all members to leverage their collective strength to make a tangible difference,” Mr Cantillon said. Central Coast Council Administrator Rik Hart commended the collaboration and establishment of the new interagency. “By working together, we can build a healthier, more vibrant community for our seniors on the Central Coast,” Mr Hart said. The interagency encourages membership from any service or community organisation that supports positive ageing, aiming to build a broad and inclusive network dedicated to the wellbeing of older adults living on the Central Coast. The Central Coast Seniors Interagency held a launch event in April at The Hub, Erina, where interested members were invited to attend to help shape the alliance. Services and community organisations supporting seniors on the Central Coast are invited to register by contacting Penny Newson at Central Coast Community Council on 0425 277 518 or rdo@thecccc.org.au.
supermarkets, as well as donations of services from all kinds of local businesses, community groups and sporting teams. “Every bit counts so we encourage locals to put aside time to pop in to drop off some groceries to us.” Mary Mac’s, provides social, community and friendship opportunities for men, women, families, young people, the elderly and the socially and economically disadvantaged. Donations can be made at 100 Blackwall Road, Woy Woy, opposite St John the Baptist Catholic Church.
