I nsomnia can be difficulties starting sleep, maintaining sleep or waking up early in the morning, and chronically affects 1 in 10 people. Once insomnia has set in for a few months then the bedroom and going to bed becomes a negative experience. That is, instead of looking forward to going to bed to rest for the night, often the person starts to dread going to bed because they are thinking that they will not be able to sleep. The important strategies in dealing with chronic insomnia involve the following: Insomnia should be seen as a symptom, not a disease and affects both night time as well as daytime in equal measures. Often people try to find strategies at night time to sleep better. However unless daytime issues (the issues that the person faces between 8am and 8pm, personal, family, work) are addressed, the insomnia will not be brought under control. Although medication can be useful and reasonably safe, the best way to address insomnia is to use what drives sleep in every one of us. It is important to restrict the time that we spend in bed. The longer a person is in bed the more broken sleep is. The second main driver of sleep is actually the body clock. The body clock is regulated by light and by a hormone called melatonin. DO’S - Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day. Maintain a routine. • Understand your sleep requirements. Most people need at least six hours sleep for normal memory and brain function. • Spend some time in natural light to promote melatonin production in your body. Make sure your bedroom is cool, quiet and dark. Avoid distracting noises and light. Ensure you have a comfortable bed and pillow. • Avoid watching television, studying, eating or working in bed. Your brain should associate your bed with sleeping. • Reading a book or a warm shower may help you unwind and de-stress before bedtime. • Avoid a nap during the day. A day-time nap may reduce your body’s need to sleep at night.
