An Australian first: Pears of Australia Successfully Spawned Two Different Species at Once

P earls of Australia, a third-generation family business, has successfully spawned two species of pearl oysters across its hatcheries at the same time. These newspawnings are a significant achievement, particularly during COVID-19 with its impacts being felt both domestically and around the world. The company’s tourism and retail employees were given a hands-on role, to concentrate efforts during this down-time on spawning pearl oysters, in an initiative to boost the cultivation of authentic Australian pearls and ensure the industry’s livelihood in the years to come. The spawnings have occurred between Pearls of Australia’s two pearl farm operations which produce two different pearl oyster species: the Broken Bay Pearl Farm on the NSW Central Coast producing the Pinctada fucata  ‘Akoya’ pearl, and the Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm in Broom in WA producing the famous giant Pinctada maxima  ‘Australian South Sea’ pearl.

they are able to be ‘seeded’ to start the pearl culturing process, and then it takes another 18 months to two years before the pearls are fully grown and ready for harvesting. From there, it can be another whole year for the pearls to be sorted, graded, and set into jewellery designs ready for sale. Live from the Shellar Door on the banks of the mighty Hawkesbury River, Pearls of Australia and Broken Bay Pearl Farm have launched their first ever virtual pearl harvest. Business owner James Brown took to the virtual airwaves to share one of nature’s miracles – the harvest of a locally cultured pearl from the Australian Akoya pearl shell, grown in the waters north of Sydney at Broken Bay. Visit our online store for our range of locally grown and fully certified Australian pearl jewellery. www.pearlsofaustralia.com.au or phone: 9985 1479

Representing over 70 years of pearling, Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm in WA is the oldest Australian-owned pearl farm and their hatchery operation is essential in its efforts to recover the industry from a disease that devastated the industry in 2007 and its ongoing productivity issues. While Broken Bay Pearl Farm – NSW’s only cultured pearl farm - represents the development of an entirely new industry for the state, opening in 2003. “Timing is everything when it comes to spawning oysters; similar to coral - the moon and the seasons must align, and February and March full moons are the optimum times of the year. The fact that the two different pearl oyster species on either side of the country managed to spawn at the same time is a truly exciting and magical event.” It takes up to 6 years from spawning tiny little oyster larvae in specialised hatcheries to finally harvesting a pearl. The oysters are generally around 2 to 3 years of age before

W e want to help you make well informed and kinder choices when purchasing eggs. Egg producers have added confusing claims on egg cartons. To end factory farming, animals urgently need caring consumers to make the right choices. ‘Organic and Humane Choice’ - Certified organic eggs come from hens kept on farms which meet and exceed standards of the best free range facilities. However, simply the word ‘organic’ on an egg carton can sometimes mislead people to think the welfare of hens meets certified organic standards when it may merely mean that hens in barns are fed organic grains. Only logos on the egg carton indicate that the hens are raised on a certified organic farm. Claims on egg cartons There are many other marketing terms used on egg cartons to imply higher welfare. These labels should be read discerningly. Terms such as ‘Vegetarian’, ‘Eco eggs’ and ‘Omega 3 eggs’ for example are not recognised descriptors that define the type of housing system or a level of welfare for hens. The term ‘Cage-free’ is also regularly used but it is important to note that these hens are raised in barns and do not have access to the outdoors. Likewise, don’t be fooled by clever imagery — some cartons may depict birds sitting on nests, or green rolling fields, but unless accompanied by an accreditation label, these images are most likely to be inaccurate. PARTHENIUMWEED FOUND ON THE CENTRAL COAST P arthenium weed has recently been found in a Ravensdale chicken yard on the Central Coast. All parts of the partheniumplant at any stage of growth are toxic to humans and animals. It has been shown to be related to health problems for

some people living or working in close proximity to it, resulting in allergy- type responses. Contact with the plant causes dermatitis and respiratory malfunction in humans, and dermatitis in cattle and domestic animals. The main substance responsible is parthenin, which is dangerously toxic. Central Coast Council Unit Manager of Environmental Management, Luke Sulkowski said that although the weed is uncommon in NSW, we need to be vigilant.“This finding of parthenium at Ravensdale, and at Engadine in southern Sydney earlier in the year have both been linked to contaminated, organic wholegrain chicken feed produced in Queensland,” Mr Sulkowski said. “This is a devastating weed, and the community plays a vital role in preventing it take hold in NSW. “If you think you have seen this weed on the Coast please contact Council immediately, or the NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) Biosecurity Helpline 1800 680 244, and our weed officers will help identify if it is parthenium and if so, help eradicate it.” NSW DPI State Priority Weeds coordinator, Nicola Dixon said with 20 infestations this year, NSW has had the highest number of parthenium incursions since 1999. “The community has played an important role in finding the weed and allowing Council weeds officers to remove and manage all infestations,” Ms Dixon said. “We have been able to successfully detect and eradicate parthenium weed in NSW since 1982, thanks to the actions of the community and weeds officers across the state.” More information about partheniumweed and how to identify the plant at different growth stages is available from DPI. weeds.dpi.nsw.gov.au/Weeds/PartheniumWeed Adorn your entrance with eye-catching flowers S et the mood with bright coloured flowers this season to greet you when you get home.. Ways to encourage kids to eat healthy

E ating healthy food is vital for brain and body development but it can be hard at times to get kids to eat those fruits and veggies. By having them grow their own string beans, carrots and lettuce, they will have a sense of pride in eating what they have “created.” This, in turn, will emphasize the importance of healthy eating. Kids will soon learn to love eating strawberries, blueberries and even broccoli! Kids learn best when engaging all their senses. With gardening, kids can touch and feel the dirt, seeds and flowers, see the vibrant colours and varied sizes of the plants, hear the sound of the vegetable when it is taken from the plant and smell the amazing scents of the flowers. Allowing all the senses to be involved helps kids understand and grasp the concept of gardening along with all the math and scientific concepts that go along with it. Gardening is a wonderful introduction into the world of science especially botany, biology and chemistry. When kids plant

supermarket run, take your family to a local farmer’smarket (or to the farm itself) andmeet the people who grow the food. Picking berries from a vine can help nurture a lifelong love of good eating and environmental stewardship. Visiting a dairy farm can teach children where their milk comes from (and why we should care about what goes in it). Planting tomatoes and melons in the garden may tempt a child to try the fruits of their labour. If you stock the kitchen exclusively with healthy treats, children will eat them. As your children grow, stock good snacks in cabinets and shelves that they can reach without your help. Some kids eat more when they’re in the car than when they’re at the table simply because active play isn’t a viable alternative when you’re strapped in. Make sure you’re prepared with nutritious snacks whether you’re driving. Good choices include sliced apples, carrot sticks, whole grain crackers, light popcorn, raisins and water bottles.

their first seeds they become curious about what will happen next. They make their own hypothesis and monitor the progress each day. Without even realizing it, kids are learning the basic steps of the scientific process. As kids get older, they learn about the impact of sunlight and water on the growth of a plant. They learn which plants need more sunlight, which need less water and how long they take to grow. Gardening offers wonderful science lessons right at home and allows your child to enjoy being outside. If you live in a unit you can plant herbs and vegetables in pots. If you involve kids in planning meals, grocery shopping, and preparing food, they will become invested in the process and more likely to eat. Even toddlers can help you make choices (pears or nectarines?) along the way. Simple, no-cook recipes like frozen yogurt popsicles or fruit parfaits are an excellent way to get young chefs interested in healthy cooking and eating. Teach kids where their food comes from. A lthough largely overlooked, a range hood is actually one of the most important appliances in the kitchen. They are designed to remove odours, grease, heat and smoke and other pollutants that are released into the air while cooking. The most important job of the range hood is to improve the air quality of your kitchen. The polluted air is sucked through a motorized fan and is either carried outside or filtered and re-circulated. Without a range hood, you and your family will find yourself breathing in the aftermath of dinner, causing possible eye, nose, and throat irritation. In addition, vent hoods help prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Studies show elevated levels of carbon monoxide in kitchens caused by using the stove without turning on the range hood. An overhead range hood offers additional lighting for food preparation and cooking. The proper lighting also makes clean-up easier and ensures removal of all that hard to see grease and grime. Lighting features can range from basic to state-of-the-art, depending on which model you choose. Stylish Upgrade - Range hoods are not only practical, but can also be a stylish addition to your kitchen. These days range hoods come in a wide variety of designs. Shop around to find the perfect fit for your budget, kitchen space, and personal style. A Good Investment - Real estate experts agree— if you are trying to sell your home make sure your kitchen is up to date. An attractive kitchen with modern appliances adds major resale value to your home. Choosing the right range hood can make a big difference in the look and feel of your kitchen. You will more than likely see a good return on this investment. Stay Comfortable - Cooking produces a lot of heat which can make a kitchen quite uncomfortable. Another great benefit of range hoods is the removal of excess heat and steam, providing a more pleasant cooking environment for the chef and the rest of the family. Less Kitchen Odour - Cooking smells can linger long after dinner is over. Turning on your range hood helps to keep your home smelling fresh. Proper ventilation also helps to prevent the growth of bacteria and mould, a definite plus for anyone with allergies or asthma. Extremely functional & Stunning showpieces

Start Making Good Fats part of your diet I n the world of nutrition, “fat” is no longer a dirty word. In fact, there’s a class of good fats—monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs)— that are essential as part of a healthy, well-balanced diet. Even if you are good at avoiding or limiting less-healthy fats (trans fat and saturated fat), you likely aren’t consuming enough good fats each day. (About two-thirds of the fats you consume each day should be good fats.) Fortunately, it’s easy—and delicious: Use Plant based oils, Add Avocado to your meals, Put flaxseed in your smoothies or on your cereal, Add walnuts to cereal or salads, Add Almonds on top of your chicken, fish or casseroles, Spread Nut butter on your toast Cashew or Almond, Eat Salmon or Trout twice each week, Eat some olives in a salad or dish, Snack on seeds sunflower, pumpkin and sesame.

Screen Time and your Eye Health

S creen time is slowly increasing in our daily lives. While this lets us work more efficiently or manage our daily schedules it may have a negative impact on our overall eye health. Thankfully, there are a few simple things you can do at home to limit eye strain and keep your eyes healthy. Visual Hygiene - Working at home or spending too much time on your devices can damage your eyes. A good tip is the 20/20/20 rule. Every 20 minutes look at an object 20 feet away (6 metres) away for 20 seconds. Dry Eyes - We blink less when we use our digital devices. Blinking is important as it helps keep your eye surface moist and minimise irritation. Make sure you still blink frequently and avoid rubbing your eyes as this can cause further irritation. If you do experience irritation, lubricating eye drops may help. Eye Hygiene - Wash your hands and glasses regularly to prevent cross contamination and allow your glasses to work as they should. Late Nights - Proper Lighting. Dim lighting can put

unnecessary strain on your eyes. Light your space well to minimise eye strain. Phone Safety - Digital device usage at night may cause eye strain and impact on your sleeping patterns by affecting melatonin production. Turn down your brightness settings and set your device to dark or night mode to put less strain on your eyes. Lenses - Look to update the lenses in your glasses as your eyesight may change overtime. There are a range of lenses available in-store depending on your prescription needs. These may help reduce light emissions from your environment and can include Blue Light and harmful UV wavelengths If you’re concerned about your vision, you can book an appointment with an optometrist at an OPSM store near you here. Or, download OPSM’s free Eye Check App and complete a quick and easy eye test to evaluate your eyesight. If it’s the right time for a check up, you can book one instantly, via the app. The OPSM Eye Check App is not a substitute for a full eye exam with an optometrist.

Conservatorium piano student achieves high honour

Award by the Australian Music Examination Board T he Central Coast Conservatorium of Music is pleased to announce that Jade Jiang is the recipient of an Associate in Music, Australia Diploma (AMusA)1, a high standard achievement for her Performance in Piano awarded by the Australian Music Examination Board (AMEB) in a graduation ceremony held in Sydney. At 19, few students reach this level. “It is a difficult exam to pass. It requires dedication, hard work, hours of practice, talent, and a love for music”, said Jade’s piano teacher, Svetlana Vokurka. In a 30-minute Recital Examination, Jade had to demonstrate an advanced level of technical accomplishment, a mature musical understanding, and the ability to feel and project the changing mood and character of the music.

Her performance program included music from the baroque and classical romantic periods, through to the 21st Century. Although all pieces were challenging, Jade found the Australian composer of contemporary classical music, Carl Vine’s Three Bagatelles “so abstract” and, “technically speaking”, J.S. Bach’s Prelude and Fugue, as the most demanding. Jade performs regularly at the Conservatorium’s end of term concerts, eisteddfods, scholarship presentations and, retirement villages. Organise your Laundry Room

W ith careful planning and special laundry storage products you can create all the space you need to sort and fold clothes, store detergents, linen, and towels. A laundry room might be one of the most hardworking areas of your home but that shouldn’t mean it can’t be beautiful. If you have the room and the budget, investing in built in laundry storage that would work perfectly in your space will allow you to use every inch efficiently.   Make your small laundry room the most serene and organized space in your home. A laundry room has a way of collecting clutter—piles of dirty clothes, random coats. Could you switch it up to make more space? A good start is to look at where your washing S nakes don’t want to be near humans, so being proactive and keeping a cool head if one crosses your path will help keep you and your pets safe. Most people and pets get bitten by snakes when they disturb, frighten or try to move the snake. Tips: Keep grass low, Remove any rubbish piles, wood piles, Clear away objects where snakes may like to hide e.g. sheets of corrugated metal. Keep your dog on a leash if walking, especially near water, avoid long grassy areas, Keep cats indoors with access to a snake-proof enclosure. If you see a snake at home: Walk away

machine and tumble dryer are positioned.  Look for functional laundry room storage ideas – open shelving is a great option because you can keep everything in sight and easily accessible. Deep shelves lower down will be handy for heavier items, with shelves above head height designed to stash items you don’t use often and it is a good way to keep them organised and out of view. Even better, opt for a modular storage system like Ikea’s Algot system or Jonaxel Shelving unit with clothes rail, that can be customised and quickly adapted to different needs and spaces. Some additional laundry room options include: Folding area, like a table or shelf, Drying rack or indoor clothesline, Set of mesh bags for washing delicate items, slowly, Keep an eye on it from a safe distance, Secure your pets, Do NOT try to catch or kill the snake, to remove call a licensed snake handler, If the snake is in your house, close the door and place a towel in front of the closed door before you call the handler. Signs of snake bite in your pet: Sudden weakness followed by collapse, Shaking or twitching of the muscles and difficulty blinking, Vomiting, Loss of bladder and bowel control, Dilated pupils, Paralysis, Blood in urine. I f your pet is bitten : Keep them calm and quiet, Take them to the vet immediately. Do NOT wash the wound or apply a tourniquet

Ironing board and iron, Steamer, Bins to sort laundry into darks, lights, towels, and so on. You can also set up an area of the room with a clothing rack or rod to hang pieces you’ve ironed. Other ideas include The perfect laundry basket, Holders and hooks keep things in their place, Laundry accessories in place with a board, A storing board with boxes and trays keep the small items in your laundry room sorted. Put your washing on wheels - A drawer system filled with smart drawers is great for laundry rooms. If you put wheels on it your cleanwashing then simply can be rolled from washing machine to tumble dryer to line to space where you can fold your clothes.

Oak provides the opportunity for a wide range of colours. Natural oak is a mild honey colour but the raw timber takes staining well and the finished options range from white to black though the greys, browns and warm honey ranges and can be distressed, washed or traditionally finished to suit the effect you are looking for. Most ranges of Oak flooring are finished with a matt varnish surface. Oak displays strong features in crown grain and knots so if you like the ‘timber’ look, oak is a great option. NSW stamp duty changes for first home buyers timely relief: HIA

T he NSW Government’s announcement that there will be a temporary increase in the stamp duty concessions for first home buyers is a timely and significant decision. “This announcement is a very welcome move as HIA has been seeking changes to the stamp duty arrangements to better reflect the price of new homes in NSW. This initiative will have positive outcomes for the housing industry and the NSW economy as a whole,” said David Bare, HIA Executive Director NSW. “From 1 August 2020 the changes will see the stamp duty exemption limit increased from $650,000 to $800,000 for the purchase of a newly built home. The stamp duty concession will also increase to cover newly built homes from over $800,000 up to $1 million in value. “The changes to the stamp duty thresholds for land are also critical. “The Government is forecasting that this change will assist more than 6,000 first home buyers, which have traditionally been under represented

Solar energy to bring savings for Council C entral Coast Council are set to save around $220,000 each year on energy expenses following the installation of an additional 1.2MW of solar power on Council buildings. Council are in the process of installing 3,500 rooftop solar panels on 28 Council owned buildings with works due for completion by the end of 2020. This project will see energy consumption reduced by approximately 1.4GWh annually and reduce Council’s carbon footprint by 1,100 tonnes of CO2-e per annum. This is equivalent to the electricity used by 230 local homes. Mayor Lisa Matthews said this project delivers both environmental and financial benefits. “It is rewarding to see a project underway which not only reduces Council expenses but also incorporates renewable energy for the conservation, protection and remediation of our environment,” Mayor Matthews said. This project has been co-funded with money collected at Woy Woy Tip under the repealed Federal Government ‘carbon tax’ which was applied to gate fees from 2012-2014.

in the NSW market. “Following the release of the NSW Home Builder details , this announcement makes sense and will support many first home buyers get into the property market sooner. “Combined with the existing $10,000 first home owners grant and the $25,000 Home Builder grant, first home buyers in NSW should be looking to a new home as a real option to take up home ownership. “More importantly, this 12 month package will provide a much needed boost to an industry for which hundreds of thousands of people in NSW rely on for employment. “The home building industry will play a critical part of NSW’s economic recovery from COVID-19 related challenges and the NSW Government should be applauded for listening to our calls for greater support. “This package will ensure that there is plenty of suitably priced new homes for first home buyers to take advantage of right across the state.” Housing Association Limited

Music Lowers Stress and Improves Health

I f you are ever in need of an emotional boost, it only takes 15 minutes of listening to your favourite tunes, as music has a direct effect on our hormones. It can even be considered a natural antidepressant. This is because certain tunes cause the release of serotonin and dopamine (neurotransmitters) in the brain that lead to increased feelings of happiness and well-being. It also releases norepinephrine, which is a hormone that invokes feelings of euphoria, which gives the effect of a natural high. This is because your brain releases dopamine, a neurotransmitter that leads to increased feelings of happiness, excitement, and joy, when you listen to music you like.

Listening to music you enjoy decreases levels of the stress hormone cortisol in your body, which counteracts the effects of chronic stress. This is an important finding since stress causes 60% of all our illnesses and disease. One study showed that if people actively participated in making music by playing various percussion instruments and singing, their immune system was boosted even more than if they passively listened. To stay calm and healthy during a stressful day, turn on the radio. Be sure to sing along and tap your feet to the beat to get the maximum healing benefit.
