Central Coast is now a certified Australian ECO destination W e are excited to announce that the Central Coast has officially achieved ECO Destination Certification with Ecotourism Australia, making it one of the first regions in the country to be recognised for its strong, well-managed commitment to sustainable practices and high-quality, nature-based tourism experiences. The announcement came just before World Environment Day’s 50th anniversary year, which encouraged countries around the globe to celebrate #OnlyOneEarth through collective environmental action. Council Director Corporate Affairs and Chief Financial Officer, Natalia Cowley said it was exciting to see the region receiving formal recognition on an international level as an ecotourism destination of choice. “We are thrilled in our role in achieving this recognition and to announce our successful official ECO Destination Certification for the Central Coast, and what this means for our local community.“Statistically, we know that eco tourists stay longer, are more conscious travellers and are more interested in a region’s local community, nature, and culture. The Auditor said “Central Coast Council is to be commended for their sustainability planning including being only the second region in NSW, and the third in the whole of Australia to apply for Destination Certification

The Central Coast will no longer be "a corridor" for travellers between Sydney and Newcastle, it is well placed to become "the” destination of choice in the region.” The Central Coast now has six ECO certified operators and nine ECO Certification applicants: Central Coast Marine Discovery Centre, Terrigal (ECO certified), Aquafun Avoca Lake, Avoca (ECO certified), Iris Lodge Alpacas, Jilliby (ECO certified), Elixir Journeys (ECO certified), TreeTops, Ourimbah State Forest (ECO certified), Noonaweena, Kulnura (ECO certified), Terrigal Ocean Tours (ECO applicant), Sydney Oyster Farm Tours, Mooney Mooney

Why Native Plants Matter
Publisher/Editor Alison Robinson - Central Coast Magazines Typesetting and design Hub Graphic Design - Nicole Chambers - nicole@hubgd.com.au Central Coast Magazines Home & Lifestyle
Native plants are a beautiful addition to every yard which, not only have an aesthetic appeal but also greatly benefit the environment.
By landscaping with native plants in your yard, you are contributing to a natural habitat for the animals that reside in the area. Native plants typically produce, fruit, nectar, nuts, and seeds, which provide a natural source of food for many birds and animals within the area. In some areas, large amounts of wildlife depend on these plants and other natural sources to survive. Throughout the year, homeowners across the country plant a wide variety of plants to improve their landscaping. However, most homeowners do not know how landscaping with native plants can benefit your garden and environment. Native plants have evolved over the years to the habitat they live in, giving you great benefits and a reason to plant them. Landscaping with native plants can save you more money, time, and resources than non-native plants. Since native plants are accustomed to their habitat, they are able to hold water better than non-native plants, which will save you significant amounts of water. Native plants can adapt to the typical amount of precipitation an area receives. Preserving water will lead to lower water expenses and increased savings. Native plants also tend to withstand the environment better than non native plants. This allows them to withstand harsh weather and grow back the following year. Every year the plant grows back is another year you do not have to purchase a new plant to replace those that did not survive. Native plants are typically more resistant to disease, drought and other environmental risks than other plants. They can spread quickly to crowd out any weeds, which means less maintenance and upkeep for you. Many native plants grow in such a fashion that protects the soil from being flooded with water. This means landscaping with native plants will keep the soil rich and allow these plants to flourish in the environment. Most native plants are not invasive and will allow all other plants in your garden or yard to grow freely. Plants that are invasive will only make landscaping more difficult. Invasive plants will control the growth of all other plants in the area.. Because they are adapted to the specific climate of the region, native plants can defend themselves against indigenous insects, fungi, and disease. So instead of spraying the plants with artificial pesticides, they have a natural built-in defence system to protect themselves. By not having to use pesticides on your plants, you’re saving time, money, and helping to not pollute your environment and not causing damage to other plants.

Bite-size nutritional powerhouses P acked with heart-healthy fats, protein, vitamins, and minerals nuts are one of nature’s gifts. A golf ball-sized portion (about 30g) of unsalted nuts per day makes a vitality-boosting snack. All nuts have different nutrition credentials and will offer various health benefits Almonds - If you avoid dairy, calcium-rich almonds are a good choice to ensure you're getting enough of this bone-building mineral. Almonds are also high in vitamin E, a nutrient which helps to improve the condition and appearance of your skin. For some extra heart help, swap flaked almonds for the whole nut - with the skin intact - because the almond's skin is full of heart-protecting compounds called flavonoids. Brazil nuts - Ideal for those with low thyroid function, Brazils are a good source of the mineral selenium, which we need to produce the active thyroid hormone. Selenium also supports immunity and helps wounds to heal. You only need three or four Brazil nuts a day to get all the selenium you require. Cashews - Contribute a good level of protein and are a useful source of minerals like iron and zinc, cashews make an excellent choice if you're following a vegetarian diet. They're also rich in the mineral magnesium, which is thought to improve recall and delay, age-related memory loss. Add a handful to a vegetarian stir-fry or use as a nut butter on crackers or bread. Pecans - Heart-friendly pecans are packed with plant sterols, valuable compounds that are effective at lowering cholesterol levels. Pecans are also antioxidant-rich which helps prevent the plaque formation that causes hardening of the arteries. They're rich in oleic acid, the healthy fat found in olives and avocado. As a good source of vitamin B3 pecans are the perfect option if you're fighting fatigue because this vitamin helps us access the energy in our food. Pistachios - Being especially rich in vitamin B6, which is important for keeping hormones balanced and healthy, pistachios are a good option for those with problem periods. They're the only nut to contain reasonable levels of lutein and zeaxanthin, two antioxidants that play an important role in protecting the eyes. Pistachios also contain potassium and fibre. Walnuts - Their antioxidant content means walnuts are useful in the fight against cancer. They're also a good source of mono-unsaturated, heart-friendly fats, and studies show they help to lower the bad form of cholesterol (LDL). Finally, they're rich in omega-3, so they're a great alternative if you don't eat oily fish Worried about the fat content? - Nuts are high in fat, but much of it is the heart healthy variety and should be eaten in moderation.

If it's too cold for you - it's too cold for pets too U nfortunately, we see a spike in cases of neglect during winter. Never underestimate how much animals feel the cold. Outside and indoor pets need proper bedding at all times, especially during winter. Always ensure your pets bedding is raised off the floor, with a mat or cushioned bed, and away from any cold drafts. Be mindful of the risks for pets if they are outdoors in cold weather. They require a safe, dry and warm place protected from rain and wind to bunker down during the colder months. In extreme cold, pets should be brought indoors. If this isn’t possible, then shelters such as dog kennels should be large enough for the animal to move around while small enough for them to retain some body heat. Additional bedding may also be needed to ensure your animal keeps warm and changed frequently incase it gets damp. Be aware that smaller pets such as rabbits and guinea pigs are especially prone to rapid drops in body temperature if exposed to cold conditions – bringing them into warmth indoors is their best protection. You might notice a change in your pet’s preferences during winter, with your cat or dog choosing to sleep next to your heater or under a blanket. It’s important to supervise your animal when they choose to sleep near the warmth of a heater or fire – they run the risk of drying out their skin and even receiving burns if they sleep too close. A guard around heaters is recommended, not only for the safety of pets but also children. Older animals, animals with health conditions such as arthritis and those with short fur may require a warm, fitted coat to help them maintain their body temperature. Cats and kittens, and even native animals like possums, may seek out the warmth of car engines, so if you hear unusual noises coming from beneath your car bonnet, get a torch and take a thorough look before you start the engine. Food intake may need to be increased - Animals may require more food during cold weather, as it takes more energy to regulate their body temperature in the cold. And remember that access to water during cold weather is still important, so check outdoor water bowls and troughs aren’t frozen and provide more than one water source where possible. If you live in an area prone to super cold mornings, we recommend replacing your pet’s metal bowl with a heavy plastic one. Farm animals feel the cold too - Maintaining adequate body weight and offering shelter in a draft-free, dry environment will drastically improve the welfare of farm animals. Communal living offers farm animals a chance to create their own heat. Cattle and sheep will huddle beside one another, sharing heat generated by their bodies, but they still require shelter, especially in storms. Establishing windbreaks such as trees can provide some shelter during storms, but ideally three-sided shelters should be available for animals to escape the cold, rain and wind. For horses, a quality rug may help in winter. However, rugs on horses can cause significant welfare issues if not used properly – and may not be needed at all. For more information, refer to RSPCA Australia’s knowledge base article – “Do I need to rug my horse?”. During winter, chickens will spend more time indoors, and this can lead to increased levels of ammonia within the air. To ensure ammonia doesn’t become a health concern, it’s important to clean the coop frequently. Regularly replenishing straw and incorporating a dust bath within the coop will help to keep your chickens both warm and mentally stimulated during the colder months. If you notice an animal in distress or to report cruelty, please immediately call the RSPCA 24-hour hotline on 1300 278 3589

W hen it comes time for choosing a new bed for your child, many parents make the mistake of buying for the “now” and not the future. Selecting the right bed and mattress for your child is key to ensuring they get the best sleep and hours required for brain function and growth. Ideas from interior stylist Melissa Gullifer at Focus on Furniture can help you select the best bed: 1. Keep it simple. Over-complicated styling is unnecessary as children grow up so quickly and their tastes change as they transition through their childhood years. Don’t go out and buy your three-year-old daughter an expensive princess bed because in a few years time she will want something else. Be practical and think about a timeless bed option in a simple colour, or a timber bed frame, or upholstered bed like the Tiffany single bed from only $249, which will give you the flexibility to add a variety of affordable quilt covers to update as your child grows into a new phase. 2. Space. Think about how much space you have in your child’s bedroom and consider their current height and growth in the future. Is there enough room for a king single, double, or queen bed or only a single? Also consider beds with built-in storage if you are limited with space. The Tex single bed has nifty built in draws and shelves, perfect for storing books and toys. Can two bedsides fit this space, or one? Will they need a desk or reading nook? Their bedroom should be designed around the idea of a personal little sanctuary; somewhere they can sleep, rest and play. 3 Test and rest. Help your child create their dream bedroom and give them the full bed testing experience by shopping with them in store. They will love it. Test out suitable beds and mattresses, and sit with them on the bed. Is it comfortable? Will it stand the test of time for your child? Think about how many years you want your child to keep this bed. There’s no need to spend a fortune on a good quality mattress. Focus on Furniture has huge range of options starting from $79 to $1099 for a single mattress and the choice of Australian made, as well as up to 15 years guarantee for peace of mind. 4. Budget. Have your budget set and do your research. Good quality beds do not need to break the bank. Decide on the important features your child needs, for example, single or double bed, two bedside tables or just one and don’t forget to add in a quality mattress. Stick to your budget and enjoy the process! And don’t forget to ask the store manager about delivery options. How to choose the best bed for your growing child
WE HAVE MOVED - NEW SHOWROOM
Kids are natural gardeners. Children love to play in the dirt, explore their surroundings, and are hungry to learn. Gardening is a healthy hobby that helps parents incorporate fresh fruits and vegetables into their children's diet more easily. Eating healthy food is vital for brain and body development but it can be hard at times to get kids to eat those fruits and veggies. By having them grow their own string beans, carrots and lettuce, they will have a sense of pride in eating what they have “created.” This, in turn, will emphasize the importance of healthy eating. Kids will soon learn to love eating most vegetables including carrots, cabbage and even broccoli! Gardening is a wonderful introduction into the world of science especially botany, biology and chemistry. When kids plant their first seeds they become curious about what will happen next. They make their own hypothesis and monitor the progress each day. Without even realizing it, kids are learning the basic steps of the scientific process. As kids get older, they learn about the impact of sunlight and water on the growth of a plant. They learn which plants need more sunlight, which need less water and how long they take to grow. Gardening offers wonderful science lessons right at home and allows your child time to enjoy being outside. If you live in a unit you can plant herbs and vegetables in pots. Oak displays strong features in crown grain and knots so if you like the ‘timber’ look, oak is a great option. This also helps hide normal dents, wear and tear as marks and scuffs easily blend into the features of the floor. These unique characteristics make oak floors a perfect choice for families with children, and also ideal for high-traffic areas such as dining rooms, hallways, walkways, and living rooms. Oak flooring is the same as engineered Timber with an Oak top layer on several layers of other hardwood timber. Oak provides the opportunity for a wide range of colours. Most ranges of Oak flooring are finished with a matt varnish surface. The 7 layers of UV cured lacquer is applied under factory conditions to provide a high abrasive wear resistance. One of the benefits of oak compared to other hardwoods is its ability to be easily stained. Natural oak is a mild honey colour but the raw timber takes staining well and the finished options range from white to black though the greys, browns and warm honey ranges and can be distressed, washed or traditionally finished to suit the effect you are looking for. Most other popular types of wood do not stain as easily and force you to live with the colour of the wood. At Proflooring Umina We specialise in quality Oak, Timber & Laminate flooring. Each bring their own unique strengths and beauty based on specific colours and wood species. Your selection will depend on an array of factors and we’re here to help you find the best fit for you. 2. Pineapple Not only is this exotic fruit delicious, it also contains an enzyme called bromelain, which aids digestion and is also an effective remedy against cold and flu-like symptoms. Studies have suggested that bromelain reduces the secretion of inflammatory cytokines that can damage the gut lining. Fresh pineapple is recommended over store-bought pineapple juice which often contains added sugars and preservatives. 3. Onion Not only are onions super flavourful and versatile but they are also an excellent source of prebiotics and contain quercetin, a plant pigment that has powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Onions also contain chromium which helps to balance blood sugar levels and vitamin C, another strong antioxidant that boosts immunity and protects against infections. 4. Garlic Raw garlic is a powerful anti-microbial and anti-bacterial, therefore it’s no surprise that it is often referred to as ‘nature’s antibiotic’. Garlic is packed with tons of nutrients such as vitamin B6, vitamin C, selenium, as well as inulin, which feeds our good gut bacteria. Add raw garlic to dips such as guacamole, hummus and homemade dressings. 5. Bone broth Bone broth slowly and gently extracts the valuable nutrients from the bone, making it a dietary powerhouse. It contains renowned anti inflammatory nutrients such as gelatine, collagen and glucosamine which make it effective for reducing joint pain and inflammation. The gelatine in particular has valuable healing properties to restore intestinal integrity and improve nutrient absorption. 6. Sauerkraut Sauerkraut is a fermented food made with cabbage that provides the body with a good dose of beneficial bacteria. Cabbage is very high in fibre which makes it effective for digestive symptoms such as bloating and indigestion. Make sure it's 100% Organic 7. Kimchi Kimchi is another fermented food made with cabbage with the inclusion of extra ingredients in the fermentation process to enhance flavour, but also produces probiotics to enhance gut integrity. This Korean dish is an excellent source of dietary fibre and powerful antioxidants to naturally detoxify the body. Again all Vegies must be Organic. 8. Ginger Ginger is a renowned digestive aid as it helps to calm and relax the stomach, alleviate nausea, reduce bloating and support other gut related issues. Ginger is high in vitamins and minerals such as vitamin C, magnesium and potassium, and is delicious added to fresh juices, stir-fries or in the form of tea. 9. Dandelion greens Dandelion greens are extremely detoxifying, and are loaded with vitamins A and K, calcium, iron, dietary fibre and antioxidants to aid digestion, promote healthy mucous membranes, healthy blood clotting and to protect against free radicals. They are also very bitter which helps to stimulate bile production and support the proper breakdown and absorption of dietary fats. Dandelion tea is also effective for stimulating the liver and supporting detoxification. 10. Apple cider vinegar Apple cider vinegar is made by fermenting the sugar from apples and aids in the breakdown and digestion of food by stimulating digestive juices and increasing stomach acid production. It acts as an anti-microbial and anti-viral and can also help with dysbiosis (an imbalance of gut bacteria). Try adding apple cider vinegar to salad dressings or consuming a tablespoon in warm water before meals. NB: Cabot Health BactoClear Caps contain essential oils of clove, thyme and oregano & are great when you have too many bad gut bugs plus relieve indigestion, improve sinus & intestinal Health. Cabot Ultimate Gut Health also combines healing amino acids, soothing fibres and a probiotic to calm inflammation in the gut lining, repair damage and improve the balance of good bacteria.

Q: I really want to make a commitment to be healthy, but don’t know where to start. Guidance concerning what is naturally best in combination will be greatly appreciated. A: You are on the right track in desiring to actually make a commitment, the key in relation to becoming & staying well. Indeed it’s the only real solution to achieving sustainable vibrant Health never obtainable following short term fads & diets. As always dare we ever become proud of our God-given intellect, the smartest people are made up of many other smart people, and if we’re privileged with sound experiential knowledge to enrich others lives, we must. One such person still doing this after multiple decades is my old friend & colleague Dr Sandra Cabot. Let’s hear from her treasure trove of wisdom... Magnesium is necessary for Vitamin D function Are you low in vitamin D despite taking a supplement? It could be because your body is lacking magnesium. Sunshine and vitamin D supplements can help raise your level of this critical nutrient. Despite this, many of our patients continue to experience vitamin D deficiency. Blood tests show a low level despite supplementation and regular sunshine. Did you know that magnesiumdeficiency could be to blame? If you are magnesium deficient, you cannot utilise the vitamin D in your body. It remains trapped in storage, and unavailable in your bloodstream. It is estimated that at least 50 percent of Australians are magnesium deficient. That means they’re missing out on the amazing health benefits of vitamin D. This research comes from a review published in The Journal of the American Osteopathic Association. According to study co-author Mohammed S. Razzaque, MBBS, PhD, a professor of pathology at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, “People are taking vitamin D supplements but don’t realise how it gets metabolised. Without magnesium, Vitamin D is not really useful or safe.” Taking a vitamin D supplement can raise a person’s blood calcium and phosphate level, even if they remain vitamin D deficient. This is a potential problem because people can suffer from vascular calcification if their magnesium levels aren’t high enough to prevent this occurring. Patients with sufficient bloodmagnesium levels require less vitamin D supplementation to achieve optimum vitamin D levels. It’s quite difficult to get sufficient magnesium through diet. The majority of my patients are deficient and this contributes to many different health problems. Many factors deplete your body of this amazing mineral. A large number of medications reduce your magnesium level; the biggest offenders are antacids, acid blockers, hormonal contraception and diuretics. Magnesium is found in foods such as green leafy vegetables, nuts, seeds and meat. Stress and anxiety deplete your body of magnesium, as the stress hormone cortisol causes urinary loss of this mineral. Alcohol increases magnesium loss in the urine. Digestive problems such as Coeliac disease, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease and leaky gut reduce magnesium absorption. NB: (Though not mentioned by Dr Sandra here Cabot Health Magnesium Complete Powder as well as Tablets has proven over many years to be by far the most effective Magnesium formula) Healthy gut foods you should be eating Our gut is made up of millions of bacteria, and a balanced gut microbiome (an assortment of good bacteria) is essential for optimal digestion, nutrient absorption and a healthy immune system, among other things. It’s essential to load up on pre- and probiotics so you have plentiful good bacteria. Probiotics means ‘to promote life’ and are actual sources of good bacteria, whilst prebiotics are what feeds good gut bacteria and allows it to flourish. 1. Asparagus - This green spear-shaped vegetable works as a prebiotic, as it contains high amounts of a certain fibre that feeds healthy bacteria such as bifidobacteria and lactobacilli. It’s also high in B vitamins, zinc and antioxidants. Grilled or roasted, asparagus pairs well alongside proteins such as salmon, steak or chicken.
Thank you Doctor Sandra!

Community invited to take part in recycling service trial from home
C entral Coast Council has engaged start-up company Recycle Smart, for a three-month trial program to collect tricky recyclables from the doorsteps of local residents’ homes for free. This program aims to help Council collect data and feedback from residents, to determine what type of recycling service might be of interest and benefit to the wider community. Council Unit Manager Waste and Resource Recovery, Andrew Pearce said the trial also aims to reduce the number of recyclable materials that end up in landfill. “There is often confusion among residents over how to correctly dispose of tricky recyclables such as soft plastics, clothes, e-waste and problem waste like polystyrene, batteries and smoke alarms," Mr Pearce said. “Also, having to visit different drop off locations is often an inconvenience and disincentive. This potentially being a contributing factor to material that could be recycled ending up in landfill or in the wrong bin. “A from home recycling service can potentially help reduce this, which is why we’re calling for the community to get involved and help us deliver a service that works for both them and the environment. “If the program is determined to be a success and of benefit and interest to the local community, a long-term program may be implemented at a later date and following a tender process.” Council Administrator, Rik Hart said he
encourages local residents to take part in this trial program. “This is an opportunity for locals to help us identify a recycling service that works for the wider community and something residents might be interested in accessing long-term,” Mr Hart said. Residents wanting to take part in the trial should head to the recyclesmart.com and register online or by downloading the app and filling out all required information. The app provides specific and localised information on how to correctly dispose of over 250 waste items, including soft plastics, clothes, e-waste and problem waste like polystyrene, batteries and smoke alarms. Please note, registrations for participation in the trial period may be limited based on interest, so we encourage community members who want to participate to register as soon as possible. Residents who are confirmed as registered, will be notified directly on their pickup date and will need to leave materials outside their home before 8am of the morning of collection. These materials will be collected from your front door and recycled. This trial program will run from now until the end of August 2022. This program is a NSW Environment Protection Authority Waste Less, Recycle More initiative funded by the waste levy and facilitated by Central Coast Council.
