M arine Rescue NSW Central Coast has been awarded $14,300 to purchase a U Safe, Remote Controlled Lifebuoy, after their bid was successful in the 2021 Community Building Partnership (CBP) program. Member for Gosford, Liesl Tesch visited the Marine Rescue NSW base at Point Clare to congratulate the organisation on its successful bid. “Marine Rescue NSW provide a critical and life-saving service to our communities and approving their application was a no-brainer. This funding will increase the capability of Marine Rescue on the Central Coast to respond to emergencies and improve outcomes for all of us.” “Congratulations to all the members involved with this successful bid, your service to the community does not go unrecognised and we are so appreciative of the work you do to ensure safety, provide guidance and expert advice on our waterways.” The U Safe, self-propelled, remote-controlled lifebuoy is cutting-edge Australian technology that will enhance the capability of Marine Rescue NSW in hazardous conditions and assist in circumstances where lives are at risk. Regional Operations Manager Hunter/Central Coast, Steve Raymond thanked Ms Tesch for the grant. “The lifebuoy is a great addition to our unit, and we are looking forward to further evaluating its effectiveness as a rescue tool in a range of sea conditions and rescue scenarios.” Marine Rescue NSW member, Mr Mal Ralston, discussed the benefits this device will provide in rescue missions.“This device will provide safety assurances to the local water users on the Central Coast. It’s a robotic life-buoy, which we can control from the shore or vessel and has a range of about 400 metres from the point of control and can travel up to 15 kilometres an hour” Mr Ralston said. Marine Rescue NSW member, Ms Megan Loaney, is a passionate volunteer and spoke about how this device will serve Marine Rescue for a long time.“This rescue device will ably serve the Marine Rescue NSW Central Coast and volunteers for years to come. This is a great investment in emergency-response equipment.”

‘GOOD’ REPORT FOR 93 PERCENT OF COAST’S OCEAN BEACHES

T he State of the Beaches Report – the annual rating of ocean and estuarine swimming sites across NSW using Beachwatch results – has been released for 2020-21 and the Central Coast has performed well overall. A ‘Good’ rating for water quality and suitability for swimming was achieved at 14 out of 15 (93 percent) of the Central Coast’s ocean beaches and all of the region’s ocean baths. Central Coast Council Director Environment and Planning, Scott Cox said the report is an important resource to help Council manage water quality at swimming sites across the region. “We welcome the State of the Beaches Report for 2020-21 and are pleased to see that the vast majority of our beaches are performing well in terms of water quality and suitability for swimming most of the time,” Mr Cox said. “Improvement is needed for Terrigal Beach, which moved from a ‘Good’ to ‘Poor’ rating, and at our estuarine swimming locations. “We have improvement measures in place for Terrigal Beach and it is important to note that the site was suitable for swimming 87 percent of the time during dry weather and that samples for the 2020-21 period were predominately taken following rain events. “Rain can cause our waterways to be impacted by stormwater pollution and this

inspected for illegal connections, upgrades of defective sewer infrastructure more than 36 kilometres of sewer pipe relined and 23 illegal connections identified. Council Administrator, Rik Hart said it was pleasing to see the majority of Central Coast ocean beaches and all ocean baths receive a ‘Good’ rating. “The numerous beautiful beaches of the Central Coast are at the heart of what makes this region so special and it is vital that we take care of these precious waterways,” Mr Hart said. “Our State of the Beaches report card for 2020-21 is good but there is certainly room for improvement and we will continue to roll out a number of measures designed to improve water quality across the Coast.” The State of the Beaches report can be viewed at NSW Government's Department of Planning, Industry and Environment's website, environment.nsw.gov.au Community members can view daily forecasts of water quality at environment.nsw.gov.au/beach The Terrigal and Coastal Lagoons Audit is underway and community members can see details on Council’s website. Council isprogressingwithcatchmentaudits at other sites and these will be integrated into the Coastal Management Programs – yourvoiceourcoast.com/waterways

is why we strongly advise against beach swimming following rain for a period of at least 24 hours. “Estuarine sites – such as our coastal lagoons, Brisbane Water, Tuggerah Lakes and Lake Macquarie – are particularly susceptible to stormwater pollution due to the slower natural flushing process and swimming is not recommended at these locations for three days after a rain event. “We should not, however, rely solely on the natural flushing process for the health of our waterways, we need to work collaboratively to manage catchment runoff and other related impacts to reduce pollutant sources entering our waterways. “Council is committed to the health of our region’s waterways and we have a number of projects underway, some in partnership with the NSW Government, that are focused on improving water quality.” Council uses ongoing data analysis to identify water quality improvement measures for targeted sites. Works currently in place include: extensive water quality testing of the waterways and testing throughout the sewer and stormwater networks including targeted CCTV inspections of underground pipes as well as smoke testing and dye testing to check for leaks and assess the integrity of the pipe network, 188 kilometres of pipes inspected for defects to date and 1,036 properties

W ater safety education is key to ensuring children learn vital safety and survival skills from a young age – a skill they will keep with them for life. Compassionate Care for Kids on the Central Coast

8 Home & Lifestyle Magazine | Summer 2022 All children receive an interactive special children’s admission to a ‘Jungle Safari’ which is jungle themed W hen Registered Nurse Adrianne discovered her one-year- old son would need to have grommets, she was naturally nervous and anxious about what was to come. While experienced within the nursing field, navigating it as a parent was a completely different experience according to Adrianne. “My main concern was making sure that Finley had a smooth journey from start to finish and that he didn’t experience any of the anxiety I was feeling,” she said. “I really didn’t know what to expect for the procedure or the process but the team at Brisbane Waters Private Hospital walked me through the entire experience so I felt supported and comfortable. “I have never seen anything like what they do with the Jungle Safari and it was every little touch that added to making Finley feel as comfortable as possible.” Brisbane Waters Private Hospital’s ‘Caring for Kids’ program is aimed at supporting our littlest of patients and their families who come through for procedures from a range of speciality areas.

and includes a welcome pack, safari hat, binoculars and safari map they can use while undertaking a safari tour in a kid-size jeep through to theatre. Along the way they are encouraged to look out for buffaloes, giraffes, monkeys tigers, flamingos, parrots and others animals hiding along the ward corridors. To provide further comfort, private rooms are individually named and decorated to suit each child including jungle sheet and doona sets that families can take home with them and a selection of jungle themed food menu options. “It was amazing seeing Finley react to all this adventure and excitement, it put us both at ease,” Adrianne said. “The kind and caring staff just went above and beyond for me and Finley, especially when he went in for surgery, they talked me through the process and allayed any anxiety or fears I had. “I couldn’t have asked for a more gentle, compassionate and caring experience for my son and I would absolutely return for any future procedures.” Learn more via: Brisbane Waters Private Hospital — Caring for Kids www.brisbanewatersprivate.com.au/ patients/caring-for-kids Ph: 4341 9522

Summer Grooming

S o many people aren’t sure whether it’s a good idea to shave their pets in summer. The hot weather may be near impossible for us humans to deal with at times but, believe it or not, in most cases our pets will be perfectly comfortable with their natural coats in the heat. Most experts will say to avoid shaving down dogs and cats. Cats in particular have more than enough ability to shrug off excess body heat and malting in preparation for summer is an important part of this process.

Anxiety after drinking W hen a hangover collides with anxiety, the result can be a rough time. Here are some tips for getting through it. Anyone who has had a few too many drinks on a night out will know the physical effects you can feel when you wake up the next morning. Throbbing headache, dry mouth, nausea and a desire to never again leave the sanctuary of your doona. But hangovers can take on a more sinister form when the physical effects are coupled with anxiety. There is a science behind post-drinking anxiety. When you consume alcohol the chemical balance in your brain is disrupted. Everyone is different, but most people feel more relaxed and less inhibited after a few drinks. The ‘feel-good’ chemical called dopamine is released in greater supply into your brain – resulting in a greater sense of satisfaction than you had before drinking. Alcohol is effectively tricking your brain. You pay little regard to the age-old fact that what goes up, must come down. The next day, your brain is trying feverishly to correct the chemical imbalances from the night before and what do you know – anxiety arises.. So what can you do if you wake up and post-drinking anxiety is taking a hold? There are also some helpful techniques you can employ to ease feelings of anxiety: • Slow down your breathing . Count to three as you breathe in slowly – then count to three as you breathe out slowly. Feel your heartbeat slow down and try to relax. • Stay in the present moment . Just as thinking of what’s five steps ahead of you isn’t healthy, neither is dwelling on things in the past. After you’ve slowed down your breathing, work on acknowledging the here and now. A meditation app like Smiling Mind can help with this. • Challenge your self-talk . Anxiety can make you overestimate the negative aspects of a situation and underestimate your ability to handle it. Take a step back and think rationally about the negative thoughts you’re experiencing. Give yourself a break! • Eat well. The temptation may be to indulge in greasy fast- food. Resisting this and opting for wholesome food low in GI will help your body recover faster. Hydration is also crucial and will help to ease your headache. • Learn . Last but not least, learn from past experiences. You know yourself better than anyone, so if you know having more than a few drinks will have you feeling horrible the next day, set limits and stick to them. If any form of drinking is leading to anxiety then take a break full stop! Your mind and body will thank you for it. If you find your anxiety post-drinking is regularly lasting longer than 24 hours, or increasing in intensity, go and see your GP. You can learn more about anxiety. Shaving your dog may seem like an obvious way to help them, but it may

cause other issues. That is because there are breeds of dogs with with double coats– who’s fur actually keeps them cool in the

summer and warm in the winter – like a built-in air conditioner. Additionally, a dog’s coat acts as a natural sunscreen. Unnecessary shaving can lead to: Sunburns, Greater risk of skin cancer, Greater risk of heat stroke, Difficulty growing the hair back. Is my dog a double coat breed? Double coated dogs have two layers of fur. The underlying coat protects the skin from sun damage and heat, while the outer coat provides a layer of insulation. Dogs with double coats will naturally shed some of their outer and inner layers, which is normal. However, to shave your dog will remove that protective layer of fur and will put their skin at risk of sunburn – not to mention it wreaks havoc on their ability to regulate their own temperature. A few common double coated dog breeds are: Australian shepherds, Siberian huskies, Shelties, Bernese Mountain Dogs, Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, Miniature Schnauzers, Pomeranians. Reasons you SHOULD shave your dog: Proper grooming does not always mean shaving. In fact, routine grooming keeps the coat from matting and becoming damaged. Some reasons you should shave your dog include: Severe matting, Upcoming surgery (shaving a particular area), Skin irritation needing a clean, dry treatment. Alternatives to shaving dogs to keep them cool Your dog does not need to be bald to stay cool. In fact, keeping your dog cool can be as easy as staying hydrated, playing in shady spots, and scheduling playtime and walks during cooler times of day (like the early morning or late evening). To keep your dog cool, you should also schedule regular grooming

appointments. Regular grooming will remove matted or extra hair and will help facilitate normal shedding. Grooming appointments will also ensure that any skin irritation your pet is experiencing under their coat is noticed so that you can provide proper treatment

Practical Flooring Options

T he Central Coast is famous for its wonderful beaches. But sand is the enemy number 1 of varnished floors. This makes laminate flooring a practical, cost effective and low maintenance option. Laminate is the most scratch resistant of all floors, meaning it will look new and fresh for much longer than varnished surfaces. The good news is that modern laminates overcome all the traditional fears. How? Modern laminates can be waterproof, technology has enabled a high degree of authenticity for colour and texture, they are far harder to damage and they come in a wide selection of plank sizes.

Of course, every floor option has its pros and cons and your specific lifestyle, location and application needs to be taken into consideration. Beachfront properties, big active families, inside pets or holiday homes indicate a quality laminate is suitable. More sedate lifestyles, further from the beach and the absence of house pets make Oak and traditional timbers a reasonable option to consider. They have tough varnish surfaces and have the added advantage of being able to be re varnished in later years to rejuvenate them. At Proflooring Umina we specialise in quality Oak, Timber & Laminate flooring. Each bring

their own unique strengths and beauty based on specific colours and wood species. Your selection will depend on an array of factors and we’re here to help you find the best fit for you. Alternatives may include Bamboo or Cork. Every room is different and imposes specific requirements on your floor and this can sometimes make it difficult to choose the most suitable floor from the many options available. SPECIAL HEALTH REPORT

GEOFF GARLINGE

Q: “What’s the best thing to take to strengthen my Immune System?” A: Undoubtedly this is now the most asked question by far, since it has become common knowledge & especially now with the Omicron variant taking hold that regardless of our vaccination status, anyone can possibly catch as well as transmit COVID-19. The associated fear & anxiety has fuelled valid concerns towards optimising Health & wellbeing in order to position ourselves to be in the best place to fight infection & disease. Irrespective of a pandemic being declared, this should always be the case -- if only commonsense was commonplace in our high tech, yet very unhealthy world. Thepopularstandardanswer recommended and endorsed by many GPs, Pharmacists & Natural Health Practitioners is *Vitamin C *Quercetin *Zinc *Vitamin D *Selenium And while logically in correct dosages these are certainly all fine in themselves, they are clearly not however representative of any “magic silver bullet”. Furthermore, the best ways to ingest these are: * Vitamin C in well tolerated gentle buffered Ascorbate form (Interclinical Professional C Plus is also very good for those choosing to take capsules) together with Propolis synergistically delivers enhanced bioavailability + substantial Quercetin. So with plenty of clean fruit & veg including raw onions, 100% Pure Cherry Juice + quality Maqui Berry Powder, there’s certainly no reason to take any extra Quercetin. * Bee Pollen is rich in Zinc as well as being a Natural storehouse, boasting a potent array of additional nutrients and elements to energise, balance & strengthen the body. Enjoying a daily handful of Pepita Kernels (raw or popped in Coconut/Olive Oil) again means there is no need to take more Zinc. Same goes for NAC supplementation not being necessary, once building up to 2 x 1 tbspn BP morning & night + 2 x 1 tspn L-Glutamine along with that which will be derived from various good dietary choices. * Selenium is easily derived from Brazil Nuts (drops are also fine) + Dr Sandra Cabot’s Livatone Plus formula provides a great boost to assist the liver in its well over 500 functions that cascade in the body to maintain optimal Health. Everyone will do well to keep in mind that in relation to priorities, our liver is 2nd only to the brain in order to best achieve and maintain Health & Wellbeing. This advice is definitely all sound. Nevertheless considering the far-reaching ramifications of potential severe illness, basic wise lifestyle principles/choices that should be ordinarily implemented still lack many attributes of the following Natural “heavy artillery” required to fight the good fight in the battle for optimal health & wellbeing...

LACTOFERRIN This

• Immune Reviver contains 5 of the most valuable and potent genuine Medicinal mushrooms - Cordyceps sinensis, Ganoderma lucidum, Trametes versicolor, Lentinula edodes and Wolfiporia cocos. The combination of these five mushrooms with their highly refined and concentrated polysaccharides maximises the potency to provide benefits to powerfully enhance immunity. As there is a clear correlation between the dose and clinical effect of "Medicinal" mushroom products, highly refined extracts are used to achieve a significantly higher dose in each capsule equivalent to 10 times the potency of typically available formulas. • Ganoderma lucidum is a highly reputable herb to regulate and strengthen immune function. Due to differences of the active components and ratio between Ganoderma fruiting body and spore, combining the highly refined extracts from both parts deliver a full range of health benefits. The latest 3rd generation Medicinal grade Ganoderma spore extract in Immune Reviver retains all actives unlike the former 2 nd generation. Latest technologies enable removal of all inactive components, such as shells and oils, which occupy 90+% of total weight. This results in a 10-fold increase in the active content. Quality and stability of life are also significantly enhanced. • Immune Reviver’s 19 potent and genuine therapeutic Herbs including 5 medically reputable mushrooms plus both Panax and American ginseng, all act on a synergetic and holistic (whole-body) level to address a range of Health and immune deficiencies while easing the mind, relieving tension and crucially helping to maintain optimal healthy digestion. This tremendous formula can also be taken along with other medications. Finally to cover all bases, it will be prudent to ensure that you also implement these Natural treasures in your Immune strategy... * OLIVE LEAF Activate+ Multifunctional tonic infused with Probiotics * L-GLUTAMINE – Restores the gut + far more (see previous re BP) * CO ENZYME Q10 – Ignites Mitochondrial Energy & ATP production * CocoPro + LM Concentrate. – Hydration, Digestion, Brain-gut Connection * ARTEMISIA Plus – Ideal to keep on hand for when trouble strikes “Getting well naturally & to stay strong is indeed a wonderful blessing. powerful multi-functional Nutraceutical found in Colostrum (though superior on all counts) is extremely safe for all ages. Lactoferrin possesses the unique ability to regulate iron in the body. So too with Cytokines, hence COVID-19 clinical trials now springing up internationally. Lactoferrin is antibiotic, anti-microbial, antiviral, anti- fungal, uniquely Probiotic, anti-inflammatory & more. As an iron-binding glycoprotein, High grade Lactoferrin can certainly help defend against viruses, infections and bacteria, inhibiting growth via starving them of nutrients & destroying surrounding bacterial walls. Majorly beneficial for crucial gut Health, Lactoferrin is an extremely consumer friendly immunomodulator suitable for all ages and so is ideal in both auto-immune as well as immunocompromised situations. IMMUNE REVIVER Immune Reviver is indisputably the ultimate Herbal immune support formula. The patented formulation is backed by scientific evidence that has verified the synergistic components’ ability to specifically support the immune system. Developed by G & W AUST P/L, a research based Australian company established in 1996 that focuses on integrative research spearheaded by Dr G Hu, PhD in Medicine of Sydney University, Immune Reviver is 100% unique. • The herbs in this formula have traditionally been employed therapeutically for their tonic effects. Extensive research has demonstrated the main active components of these herbs help maintain normal healthy immune and digestive function, nourish the liver, reinforce vital energy, improve general weakness and assist recovery after illness. • "Medicinal" Mushrooms are well known to be some of the most potent immune boosters, liver tonics and enhancers of general health. The most famous is Cordyceps, technically a Himalayan caterpillar fungus. Nevertheless it is indeed rare to ever source the genuine article. Monash University Professor Traude Beilharz headinguprecent researchintoCordyceps in Australia, has described the amazing fungus as a “bioactive treasure trove” that could help scientists consider different ways of developing future vaccines. Professor Beilharz further states “This discovery could be crucial in stimulating immunity and reducing the need for booster shots to maintain immunity“. THE COAST’S PROPERTY MARKET ISON FIREWITH RECORD SALES W hilst the property market may be the hottest it has ever been, there is one team smashing record after record, week after week and it certainly isn’t by pure luck. Coast Realty is making waves on the Central Coast and appears to be unstoppable when it comes to the highly sought-after luxury property market. There is no denying that the real estate market in Australia has certainly changed over the past two years during the global COVID-19 pandemic. Never has the property market been so hot, or so eagerly followed by the masses. A mass exodus from the cities has ensued over the past 3 years. People no longer need to work five days a week in a CBD office and pay for the privilege of small city dwellings in return for short commutes. As people sought out a better lifestyle, family-friendly suburbs and big family homes by the beach, a huge shift has occurred and nowhere more visibly than the Central Coast. So in demand are our once sleepy towns, one real estate agency has recently broken five records in quick succession for the highest ever sales achieved. Record Breaking Results: • Highest ever Central Coast sale, 18a Coral Crescent, Pearl Beach, $8,600,000 • Highest ever auction result, 22 Green Point Road, Pearl Beach $7,700,000 • Highest ever sale inWoyWoy, 59Waterview Street, Woy Woy at $3,300,000, exceeding L aunched on International Day of People with Disability (3 December), the Plan’s vision is to make the Central Coast an accessible and inclusive place to live, visit, work and play. Central Coast Council Administrator, Rik Hart, said the Plan’s focus areas reflect what is most important to our community and align with the NSW Disability Inclusion Plan. “Thank you to the community members and our Access and Inclusion Reference Group whose knowledge, expertise and lived experience of disability has helped inform this Plan. Together, we’ve developed an actionable strategy that will increase liveability, quality of life and foster a sense of wellbeing for community members living with disability across the Coast.” Access to beaches and natural features continues to be a key theme raised during the development of the Plan. In the lead up to the summer patrol season, Council has collaborated with Surf Life Saving to make sure serviced beaches are accessible and inclusive. To date, Council’s Beach Access Program has improved access to 13 beaches on the Coast for people with disability through a suite of serviced beach wheelchairs and purpose-built beach matting during the summer patrol period. Beach wheelchairs are now available for use at Avoca Beach, Copacabana Beach, Killcare Beach, Lakes Beach, Macmasters Beach, Ocean Beach, Shelly Beach, Soldiers Beach, Terrigal Beach, The Entrance, Toowoon Bay, Umina Beach and Wamberal Beach. All beach wheelchairs have been serviced to the highest safety standard.

in on their city properties and making the move, we have seen huge demand for high-end properties across the board. The lifestyle here is a big drawcard for many, but we are also seeing investors wanting to purchase properties to take advantage of the pandemic’s trend to holiday-at-home.” “However, even well before the property boom, we have been purposefully setting and resetting highest price records throughout the Central Coast, for over 20 years. It isn’t a mistake or luck that we keep breaking every record. Prestige properties are a specialty of ours and we are proud to have the highest average sale price of any agency on the Central Coast.” Concludes Stuart.

the previous record by $400,000 • Highest ever non-beachfront sale in Umina Beach, 162a Mount Ettalong Rd, 3,000,000 • Highest ever non-beachfront sale in Patonga Beach, 21 Patonga Street, $2,251,000 Stuart Gan, Director of Coast Realty, explains why he thinks the somany properties on the Coast are now rivalling Sydney prices. “Gone are the days of having to live in a city for work. The picturesque Coast is the perfect location to enjoy all the lifestyle perks of regional living whilst still being close enough to the city for work, commuting and family commitments.” Stuart explains. “But it isn’t just Sydneysiders cashing Additionally, Council has conducted site visits to assess and prioritise which beaches are safe to have beach matting installed. Throughout summer 2021-2022, beach matting will be at Toowoon Bay, Umina Beach, Ocean Beach and Terrigal Beach, while Council is exploring the installation of matting at Avoca Beach, Cabbage Tree Bay and Copacabana Lagoon. These beaches have been chosen because erosion is low to moderate and they are relatively flat. The Central Coast Disability Inclusion Action Plan 2021-2025 and Easy English version are available on the Central Coast website under 'Strategies and Plans' at centralcoast.nsw.gov.au Craig’s Story Craig lives in Long Jetty. He loves the ocean and used to make surfboards for a living. He has recently discovered the beach matting at Toowoon Bay. Tell us what do you like to do and where you like to go on the Coast? Where would you like to go that you can’t currently? “I would like to get back to surfing. Surfing has been my life for a long time before my accident. It would mean a lot to be able to get back into the ocean which has always given me a sense of freedom. I would like to go to Toowoon Bay as it’s more accessible for people with disability, it has the beach mat. I would like to see more accessible beaches with longer and wider beach mats. Also accessible change rooms for people with disability.”
