Dear Readers, Spring is here and now is the time to bring more colour into your home. Colours say: fresh air, flowers in bloom, cool breezes, and carefree afternoons. We are so lucky to live in a local community of such good people who are caring and go out of their way to help complete strangers in the true Aussie way. Every year, Royal Life Saving produces a National Drowning Report. This report examines the factors that contribute to drowning deaths in Australia by examining who, where, when and how people have drowned in Australian waterways, and sadly over the last year in 2016, 280 people drowned. I would like to make our community aware of how to identify a rip in the ocean as the calm water is attractive to bathers and this is in a lot of instances, where these dangerous rips are on our beaches. Please take a moment to have a look on page 6 at our “How to spot a rip” diagrams and stay safe this season. It is also time to prepare your homes for our dangerous fire season that will be upon us in the coming months. Be sure to find out from your local Fire Brigades an emergency evacuation plan for your area just in case of an emergency to keep your family and pets safe. How to Spot a Rip

Don’t get sucked in by the rip! Rips often look like a calm break between the incoming waves. This can fool people into thinking that it is safe to swim exactly where the rip is! Don’t swim in a calm-looking break between incoming waves. Only swim where you are sure it is safe. If you are not sure, don’t swim! If you do get caught in a rip: 1. Remain calm. A rip won’t pull you under, and it will get weaker as it gets further away from the shore. 2. Take your time to remember what you need to do. If you don’t panic you can take control of the situation. 3. Float with the rip until it weakens enough for you to swim across it (parallel to the shore). 4. Swim back to the shore. The breaking waves should help to wash you back to the beach. 5. Raise your hand and call for assistance if you think that you cannot get away from the rip. The real danger with rip currents is not being pulled away from shore, but panicking.

When selecting your next floor consider “style” as your guide by Guy Thornycroft

T hey say about buying a property that “Location” is key. With different types of flooring expanding in colour and texture range and pushing the quality boundary, you are no longer limited to the type of flooring in the same way as you might have been in the past. For example, who would have thought laminate would be produced in a water proof surface format! (see: www.premiumfloors.com.au/brands/ quickstep-laminate/). With retailers and customers hard pressed to tell by touch alone the difference in the types of floors, you can now more safely focus on what style you are trying to create in your home. In the past only timber may have met your requirements for what you were trying to create visually. Now you can create the same impression and texture with other types of flooring without compromising stability, durability or wow factor. Technology really has been well applied to flooring options and the real winners are customers. Of course a wider range of choice has the disadvantage of making your decision harder! That’s where a focus on style will help you every time. When you walk into a show room, take note of the flooring that you are drawn to first. Regardless of all

your plans and advice, what do you like the look of? This might seem simple, but you have to look at it each day, so notice what you like from the start. Secondly, be clear in your mind of what sort of style are you creating in your house? Have you looked through brochures and cut out rooms that you want to imitate or copy? In general there are three main styles to follow: 1. Stark/Blank canvas - This style is plain painted colour such as white or black with little of the timber features visible. 2. Traditional – This style is gloss finish over recognizable new timber. 3. Rustic/ Reclaimed/ recycled – This style is a rustic matt finish with more distressed/ reclaimed timber. You can meet each of these styles with flooring from the laminate, bamboo or timber ranges! This allows you to pick a style and then match it to a variety of products with different price points that still all meet the effect you are trying to create! Q: Every year around this time my family and I suffer with head colds, sore throats and annoying coughs that can last for up to a month. I’m totally over using medications that don’t work and cause drowsiness. I realise that taking them as adults is bad enough and though I’ve too easily & often resorted to it, giving them to kids along with their side effects is far worse. 4 tblsp plain flour 1 tblsp ground coriander 2 tsp turmeric 2 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp paprika 1 tsp cayenne pepper 750g diced pork 2 tblsp oil 2 onions, thinly sliced 4 dried curry leaves 1 tsp grated fresh ginger 2 1/2 cups chicken stock 4 tblsp fruit chutney

Combine flour, coriander, turmeric, paprika and cayenne pepper into a plastic bag. Add the pork and shake to coat well. Heat Oil in a large pan, add the onion, curry leaves and ginger and cook 3 mins until tender. Remove from pan. Add the pork to pan and cook over medium-high heat 3 mins or until browned all over. Return the onion mixture to the pan, add stock and chutney, bring to boil then reduce the heat to low and simmer gently for 30-40 mins. Serve with rice or mash.

Cleaning your Blinds, Awnings and Shutters Spring

through. This product can be expensive at $50 a can, but will do as promised. Plantation Shutters Dust with a damp microfibre cloth all blades and frames. Use a clean unused toothbrush to get into the ends of the blades and remove any dust or dirt. If blades are chipped or broken, they can be replaced. Best to contact the supplier you used, because not all are interchangeable. A warning though, replacing a Plantation Shutter blade is expensive. If you have several broken, you may be better off replacing the panel. You will still need to wait the 6-10 weeks for blades, just as you would have waited for the Shutters, so keep that in mind when you are planning replacement. Everything has a life... Most people replace their blinds every 8 years. When you think of it your blinds do cop a fair bit of wear and tear. They are often in the hottest part of the house - the window, or in high traffic areas, like sliding doors where hands and pets touch them daily. Just like a fresh coat of paint, a new blind can really freshen up a room and bring it back to life. Blinds that are dirty or in need of repair can scream out neglect and can be a red flag for potential home buyers if your home is on the market. Article supplied by Sharon Tieman. With the end of the chilly weather, time to open up and air out the house. Test everything is working and is free of mould, dust and mildew. One of the first jobs is to clean the windows, but as Sharon Tieman from Premier Shades explains, a spring clean of your window furnishing can make all the difference too...

Blinds. Youcan imagine howmuch dust has collected in the fabric over the years. Regular dusting and even vacuuming will assist with keeping the dust off them. Just use the light brush nozzle. If you have any little scuff type marks on your blinds, try using a CHUX blind magic eraser. These are available from Premier Shades or local supermarkets for about $5. The Chux brand is often the best and found in the cleaning isle. It’s similar to a normal eraser and will easily remove little marks from your blinds. Replacement hooks andweights for verticals or brackets for roller blinds. Most are available from local blind manufacturers (like Premier Shades) for Australian custom-made blinds. Vertical blind tracks that are not too old and still working well, you can freshen up the drapes. Just unhook a drape, count the number you need and take 1 sample one to a local blind manufacturer. They will be able to show you the latest range and give you a quote per drape so you can re-hook them yourself. Get a Professional in. Any more serious issues, like mould should be consulted with a professional blind cleaning company. Yes, there are companies that just clean blinds!

The cost of cleaning old blinds can amount to half the cost of the new blind, so if you have had the blinds for a while, it may be time to invest in some new ones. Fabric can become fragile when its exposed to a hot window for a long period of time and may have faded or deteriorate over time. Fabric Awnings and External Blinds. Wind your fabric awnings out when it is sunny and dry and give them a light brush with a soft bristle brush (similar to the brush from a dust pan and brush). Then give the fabric awning a gentle hose. Be sure to make sure it’s completely dry before winding it back in. Dust left on fabric awnings can turn into mould and mildew when it’s left damp, so the more regularly you do this the better. The fabric on fabric awnings can be easily replaced. It is half the cost of a new awning and as long as the mechanisms are working and in good order, it could be a really cost effective freshen up. It’s a great way to freshen up and modernise a fabric awning. PVC Café Style blinds or PVC Ziptrak blinds can be cleaned with a product called “Vuplex” especially designed to make them clear again if they have become smokey and hard to see

What you can do to help your two dogs bond

Y ou may have high hopes that your two dogs will provide companionship for each other, but it doesn’t always work out that way. Personalities can clash, just as with people, and you may find yourself spending more time refereeing fights than enjoying combined games of fetch. If your dogs aren’t getting along as well as you had hoped, there are some things you can do to encourage them to bond. With patience and supervision, it is possible for most dogs to learn to get along Tip #1 - Provide plenty of resources to avoid fights. One reason for conflict in dog relationships is competition over limited resources. You should always have more

What is the cause of Acne? Acne can be very upsetting, whether you suffer from it mildly or are living with a severe case and have blackheads, pustules and cysts all over your shoulders, chest and back. It can leave some sufferers feeling withdrawn and depressed, especially teenagers for whom ‘’image’’ and appearance are all important. But there’s no need to suffer in silence, because there’s plenty that you and your doctor can do to alleviate the symptoms. And don’t ever think you’re alone as around 80 percent of us will experience some form of acne between the ages of eleven and thirty.

Getting acne has nothing to do with poor hygiene; it is primarily related to hormonal changes. Small sebaceous glands just under the surface of the skin produce sebum, an oily substance that keeps the skin smooth. Pores allow the sebum to reach the skin surface, but they can become blocked and bacteria then colonize the area, causing the pustules and inflammation characteristic of acne. Around puberty, levels of androgen hormones surge, causing overproduction of sebum. This is why people often develop acne in their late teens and early twenties, and is also why it almost invariably improves as they get older. There is no quick fix for acne and you may need to stick with a treatment for some time to see results. In the first instance, your doctor is likely to recommend a face wash that contains substances like salicyclic acid or benzyl-peroxide, which will remove the old dead skin cells. If this doesn’t make a difference, you may be prescribed a course of antibiotics - either as a cream or in pill form. Some oral contraceptives can help reduce acne in women. If you have a very severe case you may be prescribed retinoid drugs which work by increasing the production of skin cells and forcing out blockages in the pores. If you do take these, you will need to be carefully monitored as there can be side effects. Acne is not caused by poor diet, but eating a healthy, balanced diet with lots of multicoloured fruits and vegetables and aiming for foods that are low-GL can help balance your hormone levels.
