Central Coast’s Spencer a finalist NSW Top Tourism Town Awards 2023 T he Central Coast’s Hinterland town of Spencer is well loved by locals – and now has been recognised as an outstanding tourism destination, being selected as a finalist in the Tiny Town category in the NSW Top Tourism Town Awards 2023. Known for its breathtaking scenery and cultural landmarks, to locally sourced cuisine and exhilarating activities, Spencer offers outstanding tourism experiences for visitors, at the same time delivering social and economic benefits for the community. Central Coast Council’s Director Community and Culture Melanie Smith said it is fantastic to see the Central Coast shining once again as an outstanding tourism destination. “The NSW Top Tourism Town Awards celebrate NSW’s diverse and outstanding regional destinations. The Awards provide communities, business chambers, visitor centres and local governments the opportunity to showcase how their town encourages tourism development, increases visitation, and drives the visitor economy for our state. “Over the 2021/22 period the Central Coast tourism industry in collaboration with Council’s Tourism Team have been recognised as winners in eight industry awards in Australia and on the global stage. “The Central Coast has also achieved ECO Destination certification, and Spencer showcases what this means with ecotourism activities like walking, hiking, boating, fishing and kayaking.” Council Administrator Rik Hart said it is no surprise that Spencer has been nominated as a finalist in the NSW Top Tourism Town Awards. “Much of the Central Coast has faced several major challenges over the last couple of years including the impact of COVID which resulted in a downturn in tourism, as well as extreme weather which resulted in flooding and damage to many areas. “However, it was the resilience and hard work of communities such as Spencer in collaboration with Council’s Tourism team, that helped put the Coast back on top of tourism destinations in NSW. “Spencer village features a small list of local operators who are committed to offering a range of unique experiences, including guided cultural tours. “Tourism really is part of the fabric of the community in Spencer and is well deserving of being a finalist in the Tiny Town category. It really is a hidden jewel of the Coast.” #TopTourismTown #FeelNSW #LGNSW #businessnsw @DestinationNSW @VisitNSW @BusinessNSW

Outdoor & Garden Lighting for your home O utdoor and garden lighting is now more widely used than ever before. With the emphasis on designing homes that combine both indoor and outdoor living, the benefits of good outdoor and garden lighting are numerous. The lighting of paths, steps and focal points of your home can be done not only for practical reasons but provide a visual interest that welcomes your guests and leads them safely to their destination. A well-designed plan can integrate practical, security and feature lighting. This lighting can be combined with sensors to control security and energy efficiency. Lighting used for entertaining may require different switching’s and lighting sources to control the application that is required. For example, lighting required for the barbeque may not be appropriate for enjoying a relaxing glass of wine. When considering the lighting of your garden first look for focal points of interest. Choosing what to light is important. Look for trees and plants with unusual foliage or trunk systems. Adding plants in nice pots or garden features can help to giving your lighting something different. Highlighting of features can be achieved with up lighting, cross lighting and shadowing that will create different textures impacting on the mood and feel you are after. The lighting should be hidden so as the source is not seen and in nearly all cases less is more. Contrasts between light and dark can create dramatic effects. The illumination of gardens and features is the most exciting of all outdoor lighting. While having a lighting expert design and suggest what products are best suited for your project is highly recommended, DIY garden lighting is very popular, and the use of 12v & LED (Light Emitting Diodes) lighting systems makes installation safe and easy. LED lighting has given garden and outdoor lighting more scope for visual effects with different colour choice and control of the light output. They are extremely energy efficient and maintenance free but it is important you understand the product you are purchasing.

Introducing the new Fire Table by Escea
E scea’s latest release, the EP1350 Fire Table, brings together people, food and flames in a clever new way. “Ultimately we were inspired by the old school campfire,” explains Lead Designer Alex Hodge. “You can’t beat the wholesome experience of gathering around a fire to share stories and roast marshmallows. That was the experience we wanted to replicate, with a product simple enough to pull it off but smart enough to have on your own lawn.” 360° social cooking experience - Simple to start and easy to use, the fire Table offers a 360° social cooking experience that gets everyone involved. With three cooking modes to choose from – an inner stainless-steel ring for a consistent medium heat, a removable kebab holder, and a cooking grill for the perfect grilled tapas – each person can cook their food just the way they like it.
“The best part of this design is that the hosts can now be part of the party, rather than slaving away in the kitchen or on the barbeque,” says Alex. “Plus, cooking on the Escea Fire Table with charcoal means it’s a lot easier and faster to get the ideal cooking temperature.” Less Smoke, More Flame - Escea’s Vortex Firecore technology gives you bigger flames, with less smoke to avoid. “The key to this technology is the accelerated oxygen,” Alex explains. “The more oxygen the fire has, the cleaner it will burn. It’s the part of the campfire experience we wanted to improve!’ Hot Food, Cool Drinks - Escea’s Cool Touch technology ensures the table stays cool and safe. Even while cooking, the outer ring can be used just as a dining table, for plates, glasses or playing cards after dinner. When not in use, the weather cover makes the Fire Table a
stylish outdoor table for entertaining. Grill then Chill - Once the cooking is done, the Fire Table becomes your night companion. Remove the cooking grills and add some wood to bring the flames alive. Marshmallow toasting becomes mandatory, and relaxing is a given. To enquire about Escea’s new Fire Table, contact an Escea dealer near you, Central Coast Bricks 4324 2044 or Abbey Fireplaces Tuggerah 9939 9848.

fabric travels within aluminium side channels offering a sturdier alternative to the off the shelf café style blinds. The Ziptrak can easily slide up and down, like a window. The Ziptrak is lockable from the inside and/or outside. The side channels can be custom coloured to match your house exactly. The most popular fabrics are mesh and PVC which still allows you to enjoy a view. The quality mesh fabrics also give you privacy during the day. Surprisingly the new style of mesh fabric provides shelter from rain and harsh summer sun and still allows airflow, unlike PVC. Ziptrak external blinds have been used to enclose decks and pergolas’ creating another room without it being a permanent wall at a huge expense. Ziptrak awnings are easily motorized and can be controlled with a remote control or smart phone technology. Aluminium Louvre Shutters add the “Wow” factor to the external part of your home and with a few panels can modernise your home and offer privacy and protection. Aluminium Shutters also work well in unit blocks where they can block out noise and more importantly create more living space and can be hinged, sliding or bifold in operation, allowing you to slide them out of the way when not in use.
Protection for your outdoor space
C entral Coast residents love entertaining and relaxing outdoors. With the benefit of a retractable folding arm awning, Ziptrak blind or Aluminium Shutters you can create an outdoor room that protects your home against the sun or light rain as well as creating a cosy and private ambiance. A folding arm awning is a retractable style fabric roof awning that projects horizontally from your home. It can be attached to the
eaves, or to bricks. It offers good protection from the harsh summer sun but allows you to retract it in winter to enjoy the winter sun. When it is retracted it takes up very little space. A folding arm awning can be easily motorised, so you can control it from other rooms. It can also be automated to be retracted in times of high wind when you are not around.
A Ziptrak external blind is one of the newest styles of external café style blinds. The

Make sure to leave 1-2 hours between vigorous activity and bedtime to allow your body to wind down. 2. Limit naps - Taking naps outside your normal sleep hours can disrupt your sleep routine. 3. Reduce caffeine, alcohol, and smoking before bed - Caffeine and nicotine can keep your body and mind alert up to seven hours after they're consumed. Alcohol may send you off to sleep faster but can cause later disruptions and will affect the quality of sleep you have. 4. Allow yourself to wind down - Give your body and mind a chance to relax. In the 1-2 hours before bed, unwind through a calming activity like reading, watching TV, or having a bath. 5. Be consistent with your bedtime - Going to bed at a similar time each night reinforces to your body that it's time to wind down. 6. Set a digital curfew - Avoid screens by turning your phone off or on 'do not disturb' at least 30 minutes before going to sleep. Consider leaving your device in another room. Screen light and apps are designed to trigger hormones in your brain that keep you alert. 7. Make your bedroom your sanctuary - Keeping your bedroom quiet, dark, and cool will create a healthy sleeping environment. 8. Leave your worries out of the bedroom - If you find you're overthinking things, it may help to write down the thoughts to get them out of your head then revisit them the next day. 9. A re you wanting a new floor and thinking of doing it yourself? Anyone can click floorboards together, but there are several important steps when DIY that should not be missed. These make the difference between a new floor to cherish and one to put up with. 3 critical points to get right: 1. Subfloors levelled to less than a 3mm dip over a 3m span. Cracks or old grout are not important, but ‘valleys’ and ‘puddles’ will ruin your enjoyment like a roof leak. Finding the dips is easier than fixing them as levelling is a skilled job where ‘close’ is not enough. 2. Leave a suitable expansion gap around EVERY bit of the new floor edge. We suggest removal and refitting of skirting so that this gap is neatly hidden. Some areas may need scotia or quad where there is no skirting or kick boards. A gap ‘most of the way’ around the new floor is not adequate and will create problems. 3. Architraves, doors, and fiddly bits like stairs require practice and the right tools. Nothing stands out more than botched and patched cuts and gaps. Most people can cut a 90⁰ angle, but very few houses are built with exact angles meaning that extra care and measuring is required to make trims and fittings ‘look’ right. Professional layers know this and look for it makes the finished job a pleasure to live with. The cost of getting it right is small beside the frustration and disappointment of living with faults. The type of new flooring is also an important factor. A quality laminate is the most scratch resistant and low maintenance solution and with modern ranges, need not look ‘fake’. Strand Woven Bamboo is the most dent resistant option and there is now a wide range of colour options (we recommend you use 14mm thick, cold pressed products only). Engineered timber will give you a timber floor you can sand back in later years without expensive laying costs. We we’ll give you a thorough explanation of which floors are most suitable for your specific project. Our knowledgeable and experienced staff can show you our comprehensive collection of quality oak, timber, and laminate floors to choose from based on specific colours, wood species, dimensions or any other characteristic needed to complete your project with ease. SPECIAL REPORT Breast Cancer – Major risk factors & Natural Prevention
BY GEOFF GARLINGE B reast cancer is a relentless disease and like Prostate in men has become far too common. Shockingly around 15% or 1 in 7 of Australian women will develop invasive breast Cancer. This is an alarming indictment on our society, especially considering just 5-10% of cases actually relate to family history or confirmed genetic mutation. So much promoted as an acceptable & normal lifestyle is in effect waving a red flag at Cancer. No surprise smoking remains the No.1 cause of Cancer while carrying excess unhealthy weight is linked to at least 13 types of Cancer including breast, bowel & pancreatic with not only the obese at major risk. While a multitude of mockers rail against anything healthy as they loudly keep singing “I don’t care I love it” – sadly Cancer will knock on many of their doors. Research shows women with a waist measurement greater than 88cm are at higher risk of developing breast Cancer, this being indeed true and more prevalent in postmenopausal cases. Waist circumference is a real indicator of the degree of visceral fat a person has in their body. Visceral fat is the unhealthy internal sort deep inside around the organs that builds up in arteries. Again not surprisingly fatty liver, pancreas and fat clogged arteries are all indicators of excess visceral fat. This fat produces inflammatory chemicals that subsequently increase wear & tear in the body. Not reducing inflammation = a substantially greater risk of developing Cancer. Whenever insulin is present in excess, it subsequently promotes visceral fat accumulation and so keeping insulin levels down is the best strategy to reduce your waist circumference and Cancer risk. Not that insulin in itself is bad, being both a very important and necessary hormone in the body. Making too much of it is indeed the problem and the result is Hyperinsulinaemia which leads to a number of serious and dangerous health consequences. Recent research confirms human breast Cancer cells contain more than 6 x the number of insulin receptors than healthy breast cells. This enables glucose to bind to cancerous cells and speed up their growth. It’s widely known that breast Cancer cell growth is regulated by hormones, growth factors and their receptors. Not so regarding testing 159 breast Cancer tissue specimens for insulin receptor content, where researchers made a startling discovery. Astoundingly the number was more than 6 x greater than the mean value found in 27 normal breast tissues obtained from mastectomy patients, in addition to six normal specimens obtained from others undergoing breast reduction surgery. Insulin receptor content in breast
Protein is indeed the most vital dietary component for those needing to reduce their blood insulin level. It is imperative that protein is included in every meal partially due to it being extremely satiating. Hence it is protein that helps us to feel full and satisfied after a meal, while facilitating this lasting feeling for longer. This way sticking to a healthy diet becomes far less of a struggle. Examples of protein include Organic free-range eggs, wild caught seafood, chemical free poultry and moderate amounts of grass-fed red meat if well tolerated. Organic Bio-dynamic Yoghurt, clean nuts such as PF Almonds, Brazils, Walnuts & Pistachios + seeds ( Black Volcanic Chias are best) all provide protein albeit in smaller levels. Protein powders such as Dr Sandra’s Quickloss & Syndrome X are extremely helpful for busy people wanting to lose weight to deliver quick, tasty & easy meal options, as also PEP for those happy to mix their own shakes. A protein powder smoothie with added Chias, greenish banana & Ceylon Cinnamon makes a delicious & filling snack mid-morning or in the afternoon, when struggling with sugar cravings. Keep in mind it’s best to eat 2 or 3 meals and avoid snacking. Fasting helps to lower blood insulin levels plus offers many other health benefits. Whilst great it isn’t appropriate for everyone though and fasting between meals will give you similar benefits. Exercise helps in lowering insulin, so best to find something friendly you enjoy & do it regularly. Building, nourishing & maintaining muscle is key and the more muscle you have on your body, the more insulin sensitive your cells will be. Hence your blood level of this hormone will naturally drop. Finally optimal liver function is absolutely critical. With over 500 functions, a healthy liver is crucial for blood sugar and insulin control. A fatty liver diagnosis means insulin resistance, Eliminating fat from your liver is essential , often difficult but certainly achievable. Dr Sandra’s book Fatty Liver You Can Reverse it will provide more direction & great info. NB. As per the previous official yet now rescinded preposterous recommendation that alcohol consumption was not harmful at low levels in pregnancy, the "wine is good for your heart" myth was always another deception designed for wishful thinkers. Via typical out of context data manipulation, global attention was diverted from solid evidence that apart from the obvious sugar problem as well as serious negative implications for the liver... every glass substantially increases the risk of developing a breast tumor, hence for prevention of formation and reoccurrence abstinence is plainly the best option. *For more lifesaving information purchase a copy of The Breast Cancer Prevention Guide from Glowing Health today.
Cancer tissues was also higher than in any normal tissue tested, including the liver which is supposed to be high in insulin receptors. Additionally, tests revealed the insulin receptor content of the tumours correlated positively with tumour size, tumour grading, and the oestrogen receptor content. In a nutshell, this definitively demonstrates that breast Cancer cells with more insulin receptors are harder to treat and more life-threatening. Being a growth-promoting hormone, our blood level of insulin spikes during childhood and puberty, when your body needs to grow rapidly. Then as an adult, high levels of insulin aren’t required unless pregnant. Too much insulin can encourage the growth of tumours as well as fibroids, nodules, polyps, cysts, acne and of course excess body fat. The insulin receptors on the breast Cancer cells bind with glucose, which in turn allows entrance into the Cancer cells where growth is accelerated. Furthermore, sugar raises inflammation in the body and inflammation speeds Cancer growth. So in order to enjoy sustainable good Health, it’s crucial to keep your blood insulin level low. To find out if your blood insulin level is elevated, simply request a fasting insulin blood test. Your waist circumference will be a good indicator of the urgency to take the test, as those with a slim waistline almost always have low-normal insulin levels. Reducing breast Cancer risk to eating excess & empty carbs, these individuals oversecrete insulin, are far less likely to experience satiety (feeling satisfied after a meal) and therefore tend to overeat. This means carbohydrate needs to be restricted in the diet. Pertinent to mention here that the other major mistake in overeating stems from eating too quickly and not waiting for our brain to catch up with our stomach as should be normal practice. The definition of fast food is not how rapidly it can be delivered to consumers, rather how fast it can be consumed – hence the double whammy in the disaster lifestyle it creates. Help pets with arthritis in winter
14 Home & Lifestyle Magazine | Winter 2023 Obviously, tooth brushing will be easier if you can get them used to it while they're still young and easily trained. Don't fall into the trap of thinking that tooth brushing isn't needed on M any products only work if used correctly. Different pets chew differently or consume treats at a different pace, certain products may not actually do anything for your pet's teeth. If your dog devours their dental chews in a few seconds, you can almost guarantee that their teeth haven't received any cleaning. Likewise, if your pet has a sore tooth and is only chewing on one side, half their mouth is going untouched. Most vets recommend a scale and polish at your local vet clinic once per year, and tooth brushing as the mainstay dental management procedure at home, with dental chews, meaty bones or a dental food only recommended as optional supplements to this. Brushing your pet's teeth will always be the gold standard of dental care. There are so many ways to make this easier for you and your pet. Instead of ruling it out completely because your pet doesn't like it, try to adapt the way you go about it to make it more enjoyable. Brushing your pet's teeth A rthritis is very common in animals as they age and there are ways you can help your pet to stay mobile and pain-free. Pets with arthritis will often show more subtle signs of joint discomfort, such as a hesitance to jump or climb stairs, stiffness when rising from rest, or sensitivity to handling. Osteoarthritis, also referred to as arthritis, is caused by wear and tear of cartilage and bone of the joints. It is estimated that up to one in five dogs over one year of age are affected, while almost two thirds of cats have osteoarthritis by the age of six. Animals are more likely to develop osteoarthritis with age, but it may occur in younger animals secondary to inherited diseases such as hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia, or trauma, including cruciate ligament injuries. Regular gentle walking keeps joints healthy and moving. Being active without pushing dogs to exhaustion is critical in managing arthritis.
Modify your home to reduce further trauma to joints: • Raised water and feeding bowls. • Keeping claws as short as possible. • A coat for short haired pets. • Maintenance of a healthy slim body condition. • Carpet tiles prevent arthritic animals from slipping on floorboards or tiles. • Ramps or portable stairs can aid animals climbing into the car or onto the bed. • Keeping your pet warm and dry with extra supportive bedding that is not too high for them to get in and out of. • A sleeping location out of drafts and a coat for short-haired pets. • Litter trays with low sides are more manageable for arthritic cats. Pain relief Depending on your pet’s general health, there are pain relief options, including non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, corticosteroids, and healthy, young teeth or that you should wait until the teeth go yellow. Proper dental care isn't just about treating existing plaque and tartar; but rather prevention is key. Try a sleek design brush. Have you tried brushing your dog's teeth with a rubber finger brush? Typically these type of tooth brushes are designed to slip over your finger and have soft rubber bristles. A rubber body allows them to be flexible, non-painful and easy to manoeuvre, and they are very gentle on the gums. There is even a handy finger cloth if your pet is especially sensitive - however it doesn’t offer your finger the same level of protection! Check out handy dental wipes if this works better for you. Try a new flavour of toothpaste. There are so many different flavours of toothpaste available, including vanilla, chicken, beef, and even minty tooth-cleaning gel. It is important to use pet toothpaste not human toothpaste. If your pet can't be swayed by the taste of the toothpaste alone, try giving small treats along the way. Try to clean the teeth when they're sleepy, it can help to brush their teeth when they are
other joint-protective, anti-inflammatory, or alternative pain relief medications. For any older pet starting on long-term medication, it’s best for vets to perform general blood tests first – to screen for any pre-existing medical issues which could make certain medications unsafe for use. Joint health supplements As well as prescription medications, vets can discuss the use of pet-safe nutraceuticals, such as prescription diets, supplements containing high levels of omega-3 essential fatty acids for a natural anti-inflammatory effect. Glucosamine, Glyde, 4cyte, chondroitin sulphate and green-lipped mussel have been shown to promote joint health and can reduce the progression of arthritis. These are good to add to their diet and often you can get good results if they are also on pain relief. Keep a close eye on your pet and if you notice any changes in the way they move around, talk to your vet.
all tuckered out after a long walk. For cats, you might like to try tooth brushing at a 'sleep' time of day (such as lunchtime) as they'll have less energy. Of course, every animal should have regular vet visits, but this is particularly important if your dental care at home is lacking. For some pet owners, particularly cat owners, it's perfectly acceptable to get a scale and polish procedure done at the vet every 6-12 months. Some pets even require a scale and polish regularly despite receiving regular tooth brushing.

Native Plants benefit our environment
N ative plants are a beautiful addition to every yard with an aesthetic appeal. By growing native plants in your yard, you are contributing to a natural habitat for the animals that reside in the area. Native plants typically produce, fruit, nectar, nuts, and seeds, which provide a natural source of food for many birds and animals within the area. In some areas, large amounts of wildlife depend on these plants and other natural sources to survive. Since native plants are accustomed to their habitat, they can hold water better than non
being flooded with water. Most native plants are not invasive and will allow all other plants in your garden or yard to flourish and because they are adapted to the specific climate of the region, native plants can defend themselves against indigenous insects, fungi, and disease. So instead of spraying the plants with artificial pesticides, they have a natural built-in defence system to protect themselves. By not having to use pesticides on your plants, you are not polluting our environment or causing damage to other plants.
native plants, which will save you significant amounts of water. Native plants can adapt to the typical amount of precipitation an area receives withstanding the environment better and are typically more resistant to disease, drought, and other environmental risks than other plants. Landscaping with native plants will keep the soil rich and allow these plants to flourish in the environment quickly spreading to crowd out any weeds, which means less maintenance and upkeep for you. Many native plants grow in such a fashion that protects the soil from
