William Crowley: Interview T he Salvation Army’s William Crowley has been working in the Retirement Living industry for over thirty years. As Operations Manager, he understands the intricacies implicit in the decision to move into a retirement village. Whilst the impetus to move might vary from person to person, he says, it’s about planning ahead. “There’s no set time,” he explains. “It all depends

on individual circumstances.” Things to consider might be the maintenance requirements of the family home, how strong your local support network of neighbours is, or your health in terms of how your care needs are going to be met. When deciding on a retirement village, you should decide what is important to you, William says. “The many questions will depend on what your needs are currently and in the future.” The Salvation Army Aged Care offers in home community care, residential aged care and retirement living and we like to think of ourselves as one big team, William explains. “So, no matter what key stream you are living in, our teams all work together to make sure that we can access what is needed to keep you safe in the home of your choice and really offer companionship.” In terms of retirement living, “The Salvation Army Aged Care have a vast array of retirement village units with different services,” William says. He explains that with all retirement village contracts, there will be a deferred management fee which enables you to live in your chosen village with financial security. “The deferred management fee offsets the capital replacement costs in the village, so you will never have a need for a special levy.” In other words, if the hot water system breaks down, if the oven needs replacing, or the carpet wears out; all of that is taken care of by the village operator. “When you buy into a retirement village, you're really buying into financial security for your future,” he says. Being The Salvation Army, there are also chaplains on all sites who are there to visit if you feel down or unwell. “They're very much part of the social and activities programs that we have on site,” William says. “We don't discriminate, of course, as to anyone’s beliefs or ethos. The pastoral care and the chaplains of The Salvation Army just provide that extra dimension to a vibrant village life.”
