TAKING YOUR DOG TO THE BEACH? Plan ahead: take your dog to the beach during periods of less intense sun. Limit sun exposure during the brightest parts of the day (10 am-4 pm) Take some shade! Dogs can burn too, especially if they have light skin and fur or short hair. Just like humans, they’re also at risk of skin cancer. Any time you take your dog out in the sun for an extended period of time, it’s important to provide opportunities for shady naps and hydration. Pack plenty of water bottles and a drinking bowl for your dog. The beach can be hard exercise, and blistering temps can lead to fatigue or dehydration. Avoid hot sand: If you’re wearing sandals, you might not realize how scorching the sand actually is. Avoid painful paw burns. Steer clear of choppy water: Find an area with calm water. Even if your dog is an adventurous and capable swimmer, rip tides and rough water can be dangerous. Don't Let them drink salt water: it’s not good for them. Encourage hydrating with fresh water. Otherwise, you could be dealing with diarrhea and an upset tummy later on. A collapsible water dish is a great thing to pack. Pick up that poop!! Rinse YOUR DOG well with fresh water when you get home to avoid skin irritations.

4 Home & Lifestyle Magazine | Summer 2020 Throughout their young lives, children will be exposed to many circumstances where they’re required to swim. Swimming when young helps children and babies to develop their strength, co- ordination and flexibility at a much faster rate than children who do not swim. The benefits of teaching your child to swim are truly immeasurable and will be felt for the rest of their life. What are you waiting for? Find your local classes and get the family swimming! Water Safety In and AroundWater Summertime is water time. Drowning is the second- biggest cause of accidental deaths of children aged 1-14 years old, meaning it is vital that your child knows how to react should they find themselves in trouble in the water. Starting swimming lessons will help your child to become as strong a swimmer as possible, and give them the best chance of survival should a potential tragedy occur.

R elaxation means to calm down mentally and physically. Letting all the worries, tension and stress go away from you and you indulge in some me time.  There are many ways to relax. When we relax, the flow of blood increases around our body giving us more energy. It helps us to have a calmer and clearer mind which aids positive thinking, concentration, memory and decision making. Relaxation slows our heart rate, reduces our blood pressure and relieves tension. Thereby giving our hearts some rest. This in turn avoids many heart risk factors like hypertension, stroke, and broken heart syndrome. Rest is an important part of a healthy It's so important to Relax. Why?

lifestyle for all ages. It rejuvenates your body and mind, regulates your mood, and is linked to learning and memory function. On the other hand, not getting enough rest can negatively affect your mood, immune system, memory, and stress level. Stress leads to skin breakouts and other skin related issues. Whereas if you relax the skin also relaxes and gets some time to recover from the earlier stress. Relaxation helps you to achieve a clear and calm mind. Every individual has their own way of relaxing and some of the techniques of relaxing are: Strolling around amidst the beauty of nature, Spending time with family, Reading favourite books, Meditation, Soaking

in the bath, Deep breathing, Watching some favourite shows, Walking or other gentle exercises, Socializing with like-minded friends, Gardening, Listening to soothing music, Playing a musical instrument, Enjoying a creative hobby or Sitting in the sun... Make rest and relaxation a part of your work  cycle every day, and taking advantage  of  it whenever possible will improve your productivity. Repair your body: Our bodies repair themselves from daily wear and tear when we rest. fat. The natural textures, colours and flavours of the food are retained, as well as more nutrients and vitamins. It's also faster, significantly reducing cooking time, particularly when preparing large quantities. You can bake, brown, roast and grill food, as well as defrost and reheat leftovers. Parents can even disinfect baby bottles.

Most steam ovens contain a water canister inside the oven cavity. The water is injected into the boiler through a pump and the heat from the oven turns the water into steam. This means moisture is kept at optimal levels, reducing the need for oils and seasoning. Some models connect to a water line.

$2million upgrade and restoration for Central Coast Conservatorium

T he Central Coast Conservatorium of Music welcomed Parliamentary Secretary for the Central Coast and Member for Terrigal, Adam Crouch to look over the progress of the of its premises at 45 Mann Street. Mr Crouch was impressed with how quickly the work was proceeding and commended the Conservatorium board and management for their excellent oversight of the project. “When the Premier visited the Central Coast Conservatorium of Music last September, she told everyone to ‘hop to it’, and it’s fantastic to see this $2 million project proceeding so quickly,” Mr Crouch said. Claire Braund, Chair of the CCCM Premises and Building Committee said the organisation was very pleased with the progress of the work to date - particularly the new, rust and leak free roof and the bonus discovery of some interesting historical artefacts in the ceiling

cavity, including some early 20thC Police Gazettes.  "The heritage value of this building is significant, so the entire project team is taking much care to ensure we get it right. To this end we are working closely with heritage consultants RKH and Councils' heritage officers on all aspects of the work and with the architect and builder to document the restoration and upgrade work." Patrick Brennan, Artistic Director with the Conservatorium said the impact on teachers, staff and thewider Conservatoriumcommunity would be significant with the addition of new teaching studios, offices and amenities and restoring and retouching the wonderful Robert Knox Hall and other rooms in the 19th Century building. "The Conservatorium is privileged to be the custodian of this building and to know it

continues to be used every day by people from across the Central Coast to further musical education and performance opportunities in our community.” History The main masonry building began as a courthouse in c1849 designed under the leadership of the NSW Government Architect Mortimer Lewis. It had many subsequent alterations and additions; including a 1887 courtroom designed under the NSW Government Architect James Barnet. As such It is the oldest public building on the Central Coast and provides a rare example of a public courthouse. By the 1970s it was inadequate as a courtroom and police station and it became the Gosford Conservatorium of Music in 1984, now the Central Coast Conservatorium of Music. • Chemical herbicides and pesticides • Artificial preservatives, flavourings and colourings • Genetic modification • Soy, dairy and eggs, animal products • Added sugar FREE FROM FREE FROM FREE FROM • Chemical herbicides and pesticides • Artificial preservatives, flavourings and colourings • Genetic modification • Soy, dairy and eggs, animal products • Added sugar Lower salt Promotes gut health FREE FROM • Chemical herbicides and pesticides • Artificial preservatives, flavourings and colourings • Genetic modification • Soy, dairy and eggs, animal products • Added sugar Chemical h rbicides and pesticides • Artificial preservatives, flavourings and colourings Genetic modification • Soy, dairy and eggs, animal products • Added sugar

THE EXPERT ask treated to kill germs (usually while travelling in developing countries).” So claims the UK’s National Health Service website. What this official source fails to admit is that over 50,000 Britons contract this parasite from the United Kingdom’s own domestic water supply every year. “Blastocystis hominis is a common intestinal parasites found in humans living in poor sanitary conditions, living in tropical and subtropical climates, exposed to infected animals, or consuming contaminated food or water.” That’s right folks, we’re safe here! According to this peer reviewed article in the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygeine, you contract Blasto, responsible for IBS-type symptoms & more from visiting countries with “poor sanitary conditions” in “dirty countries” and via coming into contact with “contaminated food or water” (or raw sewerage). This isn’t factual, though. According to the Australian Journal of Medical Science, there is a prevalence of anywhere up to 50% worldwide for this organism. That means up to 1 in every 2 people anywhere in the world have Blasto. Authorities also estimate that the worldwide percentage for Helicobacter pylori , another parasite that causes stomach ulcers as well as approx 10% of stomach Cancer, is also around 50% of all people. Hence these bugs are not so exotic or rare after all and patients who have never travelled outside of Australia present with symptoms which are confirmed via multiple stool tests to in fact be Blasto...so there really shouldn’t be any related conjecture. A regularly asked question is how common are parasites where we live? To understand this issue we need to grasp the definition of the term “parasite” and all that it embraces. According to the Center for Disease Control, “a parasite is an organism that lives on or in a host organism and gets its food from or at the espense of its host.” This very broad definition can cover almost any form of unhealthy organism. In other words, if it lives on you or in you and doesn’t help you…then it is a parasite. Further complicating things, parasites are often opportunistic as well. Medical author Dr William C. Schiel Jr describes opportunistic organisms as parasites “that can lie dormant in body tissues for many years…but cause no symptoms of illness. When the immune system cannot raise an adequate response [e.g. when compromised by another parasite infection] , these microorganisms are activated, begin to multiply and soon overwhelm the body’s weakened defenses.” Parasites are everywhere –in our water, our food, even on the grass on which we walk. Importantly they are also inside of us, lying dormant waiting for the right conditions to spring to life and make us sick. Far from being

The Inside Story on Gut Health

I t’s no secret that the human gut influences every aspect of our health. It regulates sleep, energy levels, mental health, the immune system and of course is crucial for digestion. A growing body of evidence further strengthens the widespread belief that a healthy gut is the key to maintaining a strong heart, mental health and even as a protection against certain Cancers. Not surprisingly questions around gut health abound, mostly concerning Prebiotics and Probiotics…time to bring extra clarity to this intriguing important subject. Whilst these amazing Nutraceuticals, fermented foods & supplements are undoubtedly relevant & crucial as part of a sustainable healthy lifestyle, some experts are now weighing in on what really constitutes a healthy gut. There’s often a story behind the story. In this case a side that’s been for the most part kept in the shadows, and certainly not given the prominence it deserves in the community at large…needs to be told. “Think of what you know about gut or digestive health,” challenges author Mark Porter in his new book Gut Health – The Inside Story . “Whether you are a consumer or health professional your immediate thoughts will run along certain well-worn lines of reasoning: diet; saturated fats; probiotics; vegan or paleo recipes.” But there is much more to this story. Porter continues… “There is one subject that is rarely broached, and when raised it is typically treated with disgust and dismissal by professionals and the public alike. It remains the most under- recognised health threat of the modern age, particularly in wealthy countries.” So just what is this shadowy subject that we seemingly prefer to ignore rather than confront? “I find parasites in 92% of people.” stated Cancer Specialist Dr. William Kelley. He didn’t hold back about where he found them either… “Everybody – rich and poor – the whole population have parasites.” He’s not alone. Dr. Bernard Barber, a noted Australian doctor who spent his career studying gut health added: “Well over 80% of patients we check have some type of parasite or bacteria and the slight inflammation of the abdomen and unrelated pains and aches which indicate the presence of parasites.” But hang on I hear many saying…aren’t parasites only meant to inhabit poor developing countries with inadequate sanitation? If you accept current mainstream dogma, you will almost surely think so. “There are lots of ways of catching giardiasis, such as … drinking water that’s not been

an exotic condition only found in far-flung countries, unseen & unhealthy microscopic organisms silently confront us all every day. And how do we know if parasites are playing a role in our health? Common parasites rob the body of nutrients as they load our systems with their toxins causing side effects like abdominal pain, bad breath, bowel irritation, fluid retention, food sensitivities, joint and muscle pain, allergies, bloating, fatigue, unexplained fevers, chronic vaginal yeast or itching and of course…gas. If any of those symptoms ring true, you may well majorly benefit from a thorough parasite cleanse. “The good news is that effective treatments for unhealthy organisms don’t have to be aggressive or life-disrupting” states Mark Porter. “Safe and gentle treatments have been used in every culture for centuries to effectively clear these invaders. Advances in research and technologies help to unlock these natural treatments for our modern world.” Herbal formulas used for treating parasites are ideally complex enough to address a broad-spectrum infection as these organisms will often cross-infect. The typical offering of just two or three ingredients will however most likely not be enough to do the job. The good news is that twoAustralian formulas have for many years proven to be highly effective i.e. Vitaklenz & Vitaklenz for Kidz . These synergistic treatments allow the entire family to be cleared and need to be continued for periods long enough to actually break parasite lifecycles, typically 1 to 2 months. In extreme cases, especially Blasto remains undiagnosed for years, often causing weight loss requiring Nutraceuticals & supplementation of dense nutrients to rebuild and strengthen the body. Irrespective all those affected by parasites will need and be wise to implement a restoration strategy to come out the other side energised & glowing with a stronger constitiution… along with a functional Natural preventative maintenance program for ongoing optimal health and wellbeing. Whether we like to admit it or not, parasites play a major role in our health, even in Australia. However they simply don’t have to overwhelm us & we can be the winners. The logical strategy is to 1 st come to terms with their presence, then fight back naturally to erradicate the nasty invaders. Start your journey to a parasite-free life today. You’ll soon feel & see the difference…and like so many others will never regret saying goodbye to your “alien hitchikers”. Turns out Grandma was right all along in saying adults get worms too.

Lighting your home with downlights I n these budget conscious times when we’re all doing whatever we can to reduce our energy bills, it’s important to consider the lighting that we have in our homes. The Government introduced the phasing out of the old, inefficient incandescent light bulbs in favour of energy saving fluorescent and LED light globes within all homes and businesses across the country. One option that is becoming increasingly popular in Australian homes is the installation of LED downlights. General lighting is important to a home because it improves the mood, creating a warm and bright ambiance. Effective lighting design means putting light where it’s wanted and needed, and reducing or eliminating light elsewhere. If you’re not particularly fond of having light fixtures hanging from your ceiling, LED down light might appeal. They offer a sleek and stylish, unobtrusive design. They’re installed to appear as though they are part of the ceiling, rather than attached to it. There are numerous designs available too. As a result, you can find one that appeals to your tastes and complements the surrounds of the room. When you are looking for ways to downlight your house, LED downlights costs are significantly lower and therefore the bills are cheaper. LED down lights are noticeably more energy efficient than the old school, energy-hungry globes. While LED downlights might be initially more expensive than Halogen globes or compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs), you can potentially save up to 90% on your energy consumption!

PROTECT YOUR HOME FROM TERMITES!

W hile you cannot get rid of termites permanently from the environment, you can help prevent them from taking root in your home and control any active colonies nearby. Also known as “white-ants” these highly destructive pests, cause major structural timber damage to buildings on the Central Coast. CSIRO Survey indicates about 1 in 3 dwellings have termites within the property boundary in Australia, and most homes are at risk, particularly in well established gum trees within 100 metres of the building. Termites forage almost at a constant bases and can spread up to 150 feet around their one colony. It doesn’t take long for termites to ‘nest’ and an infestation can take place within a time span of a mere few days. The rate at which termites eat wood depends on many factors such as the species of termite, size of the colony, type of wood, climate, and location. Experts estimate that over a period of about five months, a group of around 60,000 termites can eat the equivalent of one foot of a 2x4 beam. Termites prefer moist, undisturbed places such as warm,

dark places and are attracted tomoisture, and there is usually plenty of moisture in the soil upon which your foundation is built. People who are living in homes infested by termites may suffer from allergic reactions or even asthma attacks. Heating or ventilation systems can especially contribute to the spread of irritating particles and dust from termite nests. As a precaution get rid of any decayed lumber or firewood, which termites prefer over sound wood from around your property. Australian Termite Solutions can promptly identify if your home is in need of treatment. Using Sentricon Always Active System, Exterra System and the Nemesis System, which are all excellent for the home owner who does not like the idea of using potentially dangerous chemicals in termite removal, treatment of termites or control of termites. DECK SAFETY H aving an outdoor entertaining area that the entire family can use and benefit from has become extremely popular in recent years due to the various backyard and building theme TV shows – outdoor living is an Australian way of life. If your outdoor area is concrete or paving in other words “masonry” your upkeep and maintenance is low and your likely to live in a reasonably level location. However, if your outdoor area is an elevated timber deck it is of utmost importance for peace of mind and safety that you have it inspected periodically for structural deterioration. In recent years there has been an increase of structurally unstable dangerous elevated timber decks, handrails and stairs. Some of

these have resulted in hospitalization with serious injuries due to collapse. If you are having new work done or simply refurbishing an existing deck, pergola, gazebo, handrail or stairs ensure you use a suitably qualified insured builder and do a simple lic check online to confirm with Department of Fair Trading. Some quick facts that most are unaware of:- - Lic. Builders must provide warranty on workmanship as per Department of Fair Trading – Carpenters do not - Lic Builders must have all valid insurances – carpenters do not - Any work over the value of $20,000 must have Home Owners Warranty Insurance, only some builders are HOW compliant - 95% of decks and pergolas that are attached to your home require Council approval

- Construction that requires council approval that does not have an approval can be issued with demolition orders - Unapproved construction is deemed illegal and in recent times has enabled home insurance providers to null and void insurance policies - If your home is affected by bush fire zones (B.A.L) it is law that the construction materials used are compliant For peace of mind organize a safety inspection if you have any concerns about your outdoor living area. Safety inspections including reports are from $150.00 Incl GST.
